She’s a hugely successful musician, having sold over 80 million albums. Many popular artists, including FKA Twigs, Cynthia Erivo, and Nicki Minaj, have said she inspired their own work.
Despite achieving massive success, Enya lives a private life, preferring to stay at her castle in Ireland and only appearing publicly when she releases a new album.
Although she’s a famous singer, the 64-year-old has never been married or had children. She currently lives a secluded life in a castle in County Dublin, along with her twelve cats.
Recently, a post about her lifestyle went viral, giving the impression of a perfect life. Celebrities like Ncuti Gatwa commented ‘Goals,’ and Dawn O’Porter called her an ‘Icon,’ showing how impressed they were.
Singer Enya, famous for her dreamy voice, lives in the beautiful Manderley Castle in Killiney, just south of Dublin. The castle offers breathtaking views of the Irish Sea.
She bought the building for £2.5 million in 1997 and now lives there by herself, with only her cats as companions.
She lives next door to Bono, the lead singer of U2. In a 2016 interview on the TV show This Morning, she playfully mentioned that he once borrowed sugar from her.
She described the building to The Guardian as looking like a castle from the outside, but feeling cozy and welcoming inside. She explained it’s actually quite a small castle, and she immediately fell in love with it.
Since her song “Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)” became a worldwide success in 1988, the singer has lived a very private life, avoiding public attention.
I’ve always been fascinated by Enya, and it’s just so…her! She’s never tied the knot, never had kids, and for a while, the rumor mill went wild saying she lived with twelve cats! Can you imagine? It’s a little unclear now exactly how many feline companions she has, but the image of her surrounded by a dozen fluffy friends? It just perfectly fits her ethereal vibe, you know?
Originally from Gweedore, Co Donegal in Ireland, Enya grew up as one of nine siblings.
She discovered a passion for both piano and singing, which led her to join her family’s Celtic music group, Clannad. After two years, she left the group and moved in with Nicky Ryan, the band’s producer who later passed away, and his wife, Roma.
They began writing music together, and her debut album came out in 1987. However, it was her second album, Watermark, with the hit song “Orinoco Flow (Sail Away)”, that made her incredibly famous.
Throughout their careers, the three collaborators consistently joined forces when Enya agreed to publicly support a new album, though she consistently avoided touring or live performances.
Nicky died last September, and is survived by his wife, Roma. “Dark Sky Island,” the song that gave their last collaborative album its name, was played at his funeral.
Meanwhile, Enya’s last public appearance was at the 2017 Grammy Awards.
Her family sees very little of her. As her uncle, Noel Duggan, told The Sun in 2016, she lives a secluded life, almost like royalty.
A friend also shared with the publication that she’s not particularly cheerful or easygoing, and isn’t the type of person you’d hang out with at a pub.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen a lot of artists struggle to maintain success, because it usually takes relentless touring, constant radio airplay, and endless public appearances to keep those record sales up. But this star? They’re a total exception to that rule. It’s really unusual to see someone achieve this level of success without following that traditional path.
According to a source within the music industry, very little is publicly known about this incredibly successful artist. They rarely appear in public, don’t socialize much, and offer no personal details in their songs, making them a true enigma.
However, she has vehemently defended her lifestyle and approach to music.
The singer explained that not enjoying nightclubs isn’t something to be criticized. They questioned what happened to personal preference, saying that after a lot of promotional work, things often feel insincere, and that’s when they lose interest.
I’m happy when people enjoy the music, but I prefer the focus to be on the work itself, not on me personally. After about ten months, I anticipate more attention on me, and I’d rather avoid that – I’m not seeking personal fame.
She told The Independent she’s never intentionally been mysterious, but has always valued her independence.
As someone who’s seen how life passions play out, I’ve noticed music is truly everything to this artist. While it’s definitely influenced her relationships, at the end of the day, her music always comes first – and that’s perfectly okay! It’s about prioritizing what fuels your soul, even if it means navigating love a little differently.
Enya has shared that she often feels withdrawn and moody after working in the studio and needs time to herself to recharge.
She asked: ‘What sort of man would be able to adapt?
She believed that falling deeply in love and getting married would be a terrible experience. She felt her true passions lay with music and writing, explaining, ‘My real relationships are with melody, words, and lovely sounds.’
She’s shared that romantic relationships have been challenging. It’s difficult for partners to fully accept that her music is a major priority – not that they come second, but that she needs dedicated time and space for it. While people often understand this initially, she’s found that jealousy towards her music tends to develop over time.
The actress has said she loves watching Strictly Come Dancing, but wasn’t sure she’d ever be a contestant.
It’s understandable why Enya values her privacy, considering she’s experienced two frightening stalking incidents.
In 1996, a man from Italy began stalking her, and after more than a year, he showed up at her family’s pub in Donegal. Disturbingly, he was wearing a necklace with her picture on it.
The situation escalated when he was confronted and wounded himself with a knife.
In late 2005, Enya experienced another security breach at her castle. An intruder got inside and held a housemaid captive, while Enya hid in a safe room.
These events further cemented Enya’s decision to avoid public outings and fan meet-and-greets.
Enya was last publicly seen in May at a wedding in Donegal, a county in northwest Ireland. It was a rare outing for her.
The singer posed for a photo with her sister Moya Brennan, Moya’s husband Tim Jarvis, and the performers from the Irish dance group, Donegal Dancers.
The photo was posted on the Donegal Dancers’ Facebook page and Reddit, and people immediately commented on how good Enya looked.
Fans commented on how wonderful she looked after ten more years, praising her outfit as being inspired by the singer Enya. They also expressed their happiness to see her and noted that Moya was looking fantastic as well.
Last November, Enya appeared in the TG4 documentary Glacaim Leat, which examined the process of legalizing same-sex marriage in Ireland.
The documentary includes a quick shot of Seán Mac Ruairí embracing Enya at a wedding she attended in May.
