Matlock's September premiere date comes with a disappointing break

As a longtime fan of classic TV shows, I’m always excited for the fall TV season and the premiere dates announcements. But this year, the news about the scheduling of the new gender-swapped reboot of “Matlock” on CBS left me feeling puzzled and disappointed.

I’m thrilled that fall TV is just around the corner, and premieres are starting to be announced! CBS is keeping many shows under wraps until October, but not Matlock – I can’t wait for its return in September. However, there’s an intriguing scheduling quirk for the new series.

The premiere of Matlock, originally planned for the 2023-2024 television lineup, was postponed due to summer strikes. CBS subsequently decided to move the gender-swapped remake to the following season instead. In this new take, Kathy Bates assumes the lead role, and it seems that the Matlock from days gone by is now just a popular TV show itself.

When will Matlock premiere on CBS?

On Sundays starting September 22, you’ll find me glued to my TV set, as the new show makes its debut at 8 p.m. ET/PT. It’s an exciting time for me, as this will be right after I’ve finished watching the premiere episode of “60 Minutes,” season 57.

Based on my experience working in television production and having gone through multiple schedule changes throughout my career, I can understand why CBS might make an unexpected shift in airing a show like this. However, it’s unusual for a network to change things up without a clear reason or following a big event. In my opinion, this decision could be due to various factors such as testing the waters with a new time slot or attempting to attract a different audience demographic. Nonetheless, I find it intriguing and will keep an eye on how it unfolds for both CBS and the show in question.

As an eager viewer, I was looking forward to tuning in for the next episode in its usual time slot. But to my surprise and disappointment, there won’t be a new installment coming up the following week!

Matlock will then return in October 2024

As a dedicated gamer, I’m looking forward to the exciting premiere of Matlock. But here’s a heads up, fellow viewers: after this initial episode, Matlock is taking a little break. Don’t worry, though, because we’ll have an encore of the series premiere on Thursday, Oct. 10. It’ll be at our usual time of 9 p.m. ET/PT, right after a fresh new episode of Big Brother. And to top it off, there’ll be a rerun of Elsbeth’s episode following that!

On Thursdays, starting from October 17, we’ll be able to watch the second episode of Matlock. This airing coincides with the debuts of Ghost’s fourth season and Elsbeth’s second season.

The strategic release of “Elsbeth” by CBS in February, followed by a hiatus until April, raises concerns about the show’s scheduling. This unconventional approach could negatively impact viewership, particularly among Kathy Bates fans who are eagerly anticipating her performance in the lead role. Let’s hope that the show garners enough support to continue beyond this initial hurdle.

The cancellation of “NCIS: Hawaii” and the lackluster start for “Elsbeth” make me doubt CBS’s commitment to women-led shows. I’m still frustrated about the former, and the latter didn’t receive a strong launch. CBS should put more effort into producing successful female-led series.
