As a long-time Star Trek fan, I’m thrilled to see how the new series, Prodigy, is expanding the lore of the franchise by bringing non-canon elements into canon territory. This isn’t a new approach in the Star Trek universe; we’ve seen it before with Spock’s first name in Strange New Worlds, which was introduced in the non-official novel “Ishmael.”
Star Trek: Prodigy continues the Star Trek saga by incorporating previously non-canon elements into the official storyline. For instance, the recent Amazon Prime series, Strange New Worlds, introduced the nickname for Spock that originated in a non-authorized novel titled “Ishmael.”
Instead of “Now, Prodigy is following suit, but unlike Strange New Worlds, isn’t changing something that most fans might not be aware of,” you could say:
Chakotay is recognized as a Maquis member due to the Cardassian control over Bajor and adjacent lands. However, it’s important to note that Chakotay isn’t Bajloran himself. Instead, his family origins can be traced back to Earth, making him a Native American from the United States.
Through several episodes of Star Trek: Voyager, we gained additional insights into Chakotay’s background. Although we were aware of certain facts, there was always a mystery surrounding the planet that served as his homeworld. In the novel “Star Trek: Voyager: Pathways” penned by Jeri Taylor, this intriguing detail is unveiled – Chakotay hails from the planet named Trebus.
The planet doesn’t significantly influence the narrative of Star Trek, and its history, beyond Chakotay’s ancestry, remains unexplored for now.
Based on the information given, I can only infer that Chakotay’s home planet was located close to Bajor and fell under Cardassian occupation. This means that his friends and family endured some form of hardship or suffering at the hands of the Cardassians. As someone who has studied history and has a deep appreciation for the human condition, I can only imagine the anguish and despair Chakotay must have felt knowing that those closest to him were affected by such a powerful and oppressive regime. The vague details provided paint a picture of a complex and tumultuous past, one that likely shaped Chakotay into the strong and resilient leader we come to know in Star Trek: Voyager.
In upcoming episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy, we might uncover new information about the planet. This discovery could add depth to previous stories in Deep Space Nine, shedding light on how the inhabitants coped with Cardassian occupation.
