My Biggest MCU Netflix Questions Before Daredevil: Born Again Season 2

With the second season of Daredevil: Born Again almost here, Marvel Studios has a great chance to reconnect with characters and storylines from the old Netflix Marvel shows. We already know Krysten Ritter will be back as Jessica Jones, and fans are curious to see if any other familiar faces might appear.

The Marvel shows on Netflix, which concluded in 2019, often left storylines unfinished and ended on suspenseful cliffhangers. With the upcoming season of Daredevil: Born Again, here are some of the biggest questions I have about what happened in those earlier series.

Is Jessica Jones Still A P.I.?

The last time we checked in with Jessica Jones, she was still running her detective agency, Alias Investigations. She much preferred working as a private investigator and didn’t really focus on being a traditional superhero, even though she had superpowers.

It feels like ages since we last saw Jessica Jones – seven years, actually, since the end of season 3! And considering how much time has passed for her in the story, I can’t help but wonder if she’s really leaned into being a full-on vigilante by now. I’m so curious to see what she’s been up to!

Explaining Jessica Jones’ return makes sense, especially with Daredevil building a team against Mayor Fisk and his efforts to stop vigilantes. Even a quick mention of Alias, or a scene set there, would help fans understand what she’s been doing since we last saw her in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Are Jessica Jones and Luke Cage Married?

Despite a brief return for Luke Cage in season 3 of Jessica Jones, his relationship with Jessica never got a clear and satisfying conclusion within the Netflix Marvel shows. Now, seven years later, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has a chance to finally give these two popular characters the ending fans have been hoping for.

As a longtime Marvel fan, I always loved the dynamic between Jessica Jones and Luke Cage in the comics – they eventually got married and had a kid! So, I’m really hoping that Daredevil: Born Again season two might hint at a similar development for them in the MCU, even if it’s just mentioned that it happened off-screen. It would be fantastic to see that part of their story acknowledged.

What Happened With Luke Cage’s Crime Boss Arc?

The second season of Luke Cage ended with a significant cliffhanger. Luke took over Harlem’s Paradise after Black Mariah’s death, and seemed to think he could change the criminal world by becoming a leader within it.

The third season of Luke Cage hinted at diving into complex moral dilemmas, but unfortunately, those storylines were never resolved due to the cancellation of the Netflix Marvel shows before Disney+ launched.

The upcoming season of Daredevil: Born Again might bring back the idea of Luke Cage’s club, or at least let us know if it’s still open in Harlem. It would be simple for Jessica Jones to mention it if anyone asks where Luke is.

It would be really interesting to explore a storyline where Luke Cage secretly made an agreement with Mayor Fisk, leveraging their shared backgrounds in crime – essentially, a deal between two crime bosses.

What Happened to Danny Rand’s Iron Fist?

The second season of Iron Fist also ended with a significant unresolved plot point after the show was cancelled. The finale showed Danny Rand leaving New York to find Orson Randall, hoping to uncover the history of the previous Iron Fist. During his travels in Asia with Ward Meachum, he’d also discovered a new way to use his chi, channeling it through a pair of pistols.

Colleen Wing is now the Iron Fist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, protecting New York City. Unlike previous Iron Fists, she focuses her energy through her sword instead of her fists. As far as we know, she’s still the one holding the title, which raises the question of whether she’s aware of and potentially involved in the conflict between Wilson Fisk and the other vigilantes. Knowing Colleen, she’d likely step in to help if she could.

Even though it might be unlikely, a brief update on what’s happening with Danny and Colleen in the new season of Daredevil: Born Again would be really appreciated.

What’s Going On With The Hand?

The Hand was a dangerous ninja group that acted as a central enemy in several Netflix Marvel shows. They were a major focus of The Defenders (2017), where Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist teamed up for the first time to defeat The Hand’s leaders and stop their evil plan to bring Elektra Natchios back to life.

Even though the recent storyline concluded with the defeat of The Hand’s leaders, the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day shows the organization is still active in New York City. This creates a great opportunity for future stories that could connect Daredevil with other Marvel heroes from the Netflix shows who have battled this ninja group.

There’s a lot of speculation about how Marvel will introduce the Hand, a shadowy organization, into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s possible the second season of Daredevil: Born Again could lay the groundwork for their appearance in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day project. Alternatively, Spider-Man: Brand New Day might be the one to set things up for The Hand’s return in the already-planned third season of Daredevil: Born Again.

It’s great to see the main villain group from New York still active in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly with the upcoming premiere of Daredevil: Born Again season 2.

Will More Defenders Join Daredevil’s Army Beyond Jessica?

Bringing The Defenders back together would be a satisfying moment for fans who have followed the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years. Despite their contrasting personalities and abilities, the 2017 team-up showed how well these heroes complement each other.

It’s great news that Jessica Jones and Daredevil are teaming up, and it makes you think about which other heroes might join them. With Mayor Fisk creating a task force to go after all vigilantes in New York City, the stakes are incredibly high for everyone operating outside the law.

That should certainly warrant some major backup.

The second season of Daredevil: Born Again tells a story so impactful that a Defenders team-up nine years later would feel natural and justified, instead of forced just to please fans.

Where Is The Punisher?

Even though The Punisher got away from Mayor Fisk’s team at the end of Daredevil: Born Again season 1, it seems Frank Castle won’t be helping Matt Murdock as Daredevil continues his fight with Kingpin in season 2.

With the Punisher slated for his own Marvel special later this year and a confirmed role in the Brand New Day storyline with Spider-Man, plus his lack of presence in promotional materials for Born Again season 2, it’s likely he won’t be part of that show.

It’s interesting that Frank isn’t staying to protect Karen Page or continue assisting “Red.” Could the events of the new Punisher Special in the Marvel Cinematic Universe be happening concurrently?

Where’s Spider-Man In All of This?

Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin, is now waging war against all vigilantes operating in New York City, not just the ones who were featured in the Netflix Marvel shows. This puts Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland, firmly in the spotlight, especially with the recent trailer highlighting his crime-fighting activities throughout the city. In fact, Mayor Fisk even mentioned Spider-Man directly during the first season of Daredevil: Born Again.

Marvel has been careful not to promise a Spider-Man cameo, but it would be great to at least get a mention of the character in the new season of Daredevil. Alternatively, maybe his absence will be addressed in the Brand New Day storyline.

Daredevil: Born Again season 2 premieres March 24th on Disney+.
