As a devoted cinephile with a deep appreciation for the intricacies of film production and the magic it brings to life, I am thrilled to witness Netflix’s latest expansion in Albuquerque, New Mexico. With four new soundstages added to its already impressive facilities at Netflix Albuquerque Studios, this move cements the streaming giant’s robust presence in the state and further solidifies its role as a significant player in the film and television industry.
I’m thrilled to share that Netflix is growing its footprint in New Mexico by adding four new soundstages to its production facility. This expansion strengthens Netflix’s significant presence in the state, allowing for more film and television productions to thrive under the streaming giant’s umbrella.
The announcement made by the streaming giant on Thursday revealed that besides the stages, their expansion includes three mills, a production office, two support buildings for stages, and two backlot areas occupying a total of 108 acres at the property close to Albuquerque. (Or) The streaming company unveiled plans for an expansion that not only involves several stages but also incorporates three mills, a production office, two stage support structures, and two backlot sites covering approximately 108 acres near Albuquerque, as announced on Thursday.
In 2018, Netflix, an entertainment company based in Los Gatos, California, purchased ABQ Studios. Since then, they have filmed numerous projects in this area, including the supernatural thriller “Stranger Things” and the gritty western “The Harder They Fall.” Netflix representatives chose not to disclose the financial details of these new acquisitions.
As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled about the expansion plan Netflix announced last year. In 2020, they revealed their intention to expand their New Mexico campus significantly. This exciting project includes the addition of ten new stages, post-production facilities, offices, mills, backlots, and other essential infrastructure.
“Netflix’s co-CEO, Ted Sarandos, declared in a statement that New Mexico has been exceptional for our production activities. With its diverse landscapes, skilled labor force, and welcoming community, it provides us with an ideal setting. Our ongoing investment in this region is a testament to our dedication to the local population and New Mexico’s rich cultural and economic fabric.”
At Netflix Albuquerque Studios, the streamer isn’t the sole production company that has made use of the facilities. Before Netflix took ownership, other productions, such as Disney’s “The Avengers,” Lionsgate’s “Sicario,” and AMC Networks’ “Breaking Bad” (created by Sony Television), filmed on the Mesa del Sol lot.
I’ve noticed an increasing number of productions making their way to New Mexico lately, drawn by its attractive tax incentive program. The film and TV tax credits here can reach as high as 40% of our direct production and post-production expenses. With such generous incentives also being offered in places like Georgia and other popular filming destinations, Los Angeles faces the ongoing challenge of keeping productions from relocating.
Netflix has invested approximately $575 million in New Mexico film productions and employed over 4,000 local actors and crew members since acquiring ABQ Studios. According to the company’s statement, some of their New Mexico projects include “Stranger Things,” “The Harder They Fall,” “Army of the Dead,” and “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.”
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that during the unveiling of Albuquerque Studios’ latest expansion last Thursday, Netflix gave us a sneak peek into three upcoming productions set to be filmed there: a heartwarming western romance titled “Ransom Canyon,” a gripping medical procedural named “Pulse,” and an intriguing supernatural series called “The Boroughs.”
The streamer vowed to prioritize sustainability in their renovation project. This commitment is reflected in the inclusion of solar panels and battery storage, geothermal heating and cooling systems, energy-efficient appliances, and fifty electric vehicle charging stations.
