‘Despicable Me 4’ notches another win for family films at the box office

As a movie reviewer with over two decades of experience in the industry, I have seen my fair share of box office hits and misses. This past weekend was a breath of fresh air, as family films once again proved their worth at the box office.

As a movie buff, I’m thrilled to share that “Despicable Me 4” took the number one spot at the box office over the weekend. Family movies have been absolutely killing it lately, bringing in big bucks for studios and keeping movie theaters bustling with crowds.

As a passionate fan, I’m thrilled to share that the latest installation in the collaborative effort between Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment – a marvel in animated franchises – generated an impressive $75 million within its first three days in the U.S. and Canada, according to estimates from Comscore. The movie had a strong start with a $27 million opening on Wednesday, bringing its total estimated earnings up to an astounding $122 million!

Disney-Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” earned $30 million over the weekend, dropping to the second spot. It has generated a total of $533 million in the U.S. and Canadian box offices since its release last month. The film has surpassed the $1 billion mark in global sales.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the second weekend box office numbers for movies have been announced. Paramount Picture’s “A Quiet Place: Day One” prequel brought in an impressive $21 million, placing it as the third highest-grossing film. Trailing closely behind was A24’s horror flick, “MaXXXine,” with a respectable earnings of $6.7 million. Lastly, Sony Pictures’ action-comedy “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” rounded out the top five with $6.5 million in ticket sales.

According to Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, the Fourth of July weekend’s robust box office performance and diverse film choices stood out in stark contrast to the disappointing attendance during Memorial Day weekend, causing industry experts to take notice.

I’ve noticed an astonishing shift in box office numbers recently. A couple of unexpected blockbusters followed by some critically acclaimed films have completely transformed the way we view the movie theater scene and the film industry as a whole. It goes to show just how unpredictable the box office can be.

The allure of family films is a significant factor in the revival of cinema attendance. According to certain cinema proprietors, the success of “Inside Out 2” has drawn families back into the multiplexes. With the upcoming releases of “Despicable Me 4,” along with other family-oriented movies such as “Moana 2,” “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” and “Wicked,” these theater owners express a positive outlook for their business towards the end of the year.

“You’ve got to have the movies out there to pull that audience in,” Dergarabedian said.

While “Kinds of Kindness” by director Yorgos Lanthimos saw a significant expansion in theaters from 490 to 920 during its third weekend, unfortunately, the box office revenue only increased by 45% to $860,000. As a result, the film’s overall earnings reached $3.8 million.
