These days, major streaming services are all competing for anime fans. With new shows and movies constantly appearing on Netflix, Crunchyroll, and others, it can be hard to keep track of where to watch your favorites. Late in 2025, HBO joined the competition by partnering with GKIDS, adding a variety of popular anime films to its existing lineup of hits like Lazarus and Hunter x Hunter.
HBO Max has always been a great place to find high-quality movies, and many of those films continue to be highlights of the service. Recently, the selection has gotten even better with the addition of classic anime from directors like Satoshi Kon, Mamoru Hosoda, and Makoto Shinkai, as well as fantastic new movies from the past few years.
HBO Max has Studio Ghibli’s Best Films Ready to Binge at the Touch of a Button
For anime enthusiasts, HBO Max is still the only place to find the complete Studio Ghibli film library, excluding Isao Takahata’s Grave of the Fireflies. For the last 25 years, Ghibli has been a beloved source of anime classics, achieving worldwide fame with the 2001 hit Spirited Away and, more recently, another Oscar-winning film, The Boy and the Heron.
Whether you’re in the mood for a whimsical fairytale like Howl’s Moving Castle or a thoughtful wartime story such as The Wind Rises, HBO Max offers a great selection of films from animation master Hayao Miyazaki and other renowned directors—perfect for a relaxing night in.
Lonely Castle in the Mirror Comforts the Pain of Childhood Isolation
Directed by Keiichi Hara and released in 2022, Lonely Castle in the Mirror tells the story of seven teenagers who unexpectedly enter a magical castle through their home mirrors. The castle’s caretaker, known as the Wolf Queen, tells them a key is hidden inside, and whoever finds it will have their wish come true. But as they spend time together, the teens discover that their growing friendships are becoming more important than getting what they’ve always wanted.
Despite its focus on friendship, Lonely Castle in the Mirror is a surprisingly thoughtful story about the impact of bullying and loneliness on children. The characters build strong, supportive relationships with each other, offering healing and encouragement. These bonds become incredibly resilient as they work together to solve the mystery of the castle and understand their connections.
Belle is an Inspiring Anime Modernization of Beauty & The Beast
Directed by Mamoru Hosoda, the 2021 film Belle is a moving story about a young girl overcoming depression through music. After losing her mother, Suzu Naito stopped singing. But when she joins a massive online world called “U,” she rediscovers her voice and unexpectedly becomes a popular internet singer.
Suzu hid behind her online persona because she lacked the confidence to sing openly, but she truly started to grow when she had to find the courage to help someone going through a difficult time. Belle is a moving story about overcoming the past and finding peace, and it’s a fresh, anime-style take on the beloved Beauty and the Beast tale that fans will love.
Perfect Blue is a Mind-Boggling Psychological Horror from Beginning to End
Satoshi Kon’s 1998 film, Perfect Blue, is a suspenseful and disturbing psychological horror story. It follows Mima Kirigoe, a pop idol who decides to become an actress. While she receives support in launching her new career, the pressure takes a toll on her mental state. Things become even more frightening when an obsessive stalker appears, causing Mima to lose track of what’s real and what’s a nightmare.
Often considered a classic, Perfect Blue is a disturbing and unforgettable film. It tackles difficult subjects like sexual assault and features intensely violent scenes as the main character, Mima, is stalked and terrorized. The movie is deeply unsettling, expertly building suspense and confusion until its shocking and impactful ending.
Promare is a Hot Mess of Insanely Fun Action
The anime Promare bursts onto the scene with a story similar to the popular Fire Force. It features the Burnish, humans with flame powers who are initially seen as dangerous monsters. They are opposed by a team of heroic firefighters led by Kray Foresight. The main character, Galo Thymos, joins their fight against a rising terrorist group known as the “Mad Burnish.”
From the creators of popular anime like Guren Lagann and Kill la Kill comes Promare, a visually stunning and wildly energetic action movie. It mixes giant robots with unpredictable superpowers. The hero, Galo, is a bold and determined character whose unwavering spirit leads to an incredibly fun and unexpected friendship with his former enemy.
Angel’s Egg is an Addictively Unsettling & Curious Tale About Religion
Released in 1985, Angel’s Egg is a visually stunning and thought-provoking drama. It follows a young girl who finds an egg believed to contain an angel, and her encounters with a soldier gradually reveal the secrets behind it. The film is a quiet, haunting exploration of faith and the idea of divine beings, told with very little dialogue and a strong emphasis on imagery rather than action.
Angel’s Egg creates a captivating, gothic atmosphere that draws you in, even though the characters don’t speak. The film builds a constant sense of unease around the central mystery – what’s inside the egg, and could it be an angel? The answer is eventually revealed, but it comes at a great price.
Ride Your Wave Turns Grief Into a Fun Comedy About Growth
The creators of another popular film bring you Ride Your Wave, a touching and unusual story about grief and acceptance. After Hinako’s boyfriend, Minato, tragically drowns, she starts seeing his spirit in water. Instead of dealing with her loss, she chooses to believe he’s still with her and tries to live as if nothing has changed.
I absolutely love how Ride Your Wave takes such a heavy topic – grief and not wanting to let go – and initially presents it with this really upbeat, almost playful energy. It’s amazing! But then, it gently forces you to confront reality alongside Hinako. It’s not just a love story; it’s about a young woman finding her strength and learning to be independent. Even though saying goodbye to Minato is incredibly sad, the movie ultimately leaves you feeling hopeful and empowered. It’s a beautiful film!
The Colors Within Turns the Soul of Music Into Something You can Visualize
The director of the acclaimed film A Silent Voice brings us The Colors Within, a touching story about a girl named Totsuko who can see people’s emotions as vibrant colors. She’s always had this unique ability, and when she pursues a classmate with what she believes is the most beautiful aura, her previously solitary life is filled with joy and color.
The Colors Within is a heartwarming and lovely film about self-discovery. Totsuko, Kimi, and Rui come together to form a band, and through their shared experiences, they each learn to accept themselves. Their growing friendship gives them the confidence to express their true feelings.
Wolf Children Presents Anime Fans With the Harsh Reality of Parenthood
Mamoru Hosoda’s Wolf Children is a heartwarming and magical story centered on the challenges and joys of being a mother. Hana unexpectedly gives birth to two children who are part wolf, named Ame and Yuki. When their father dies, she’s left to raise them on her own. Knowing she needs to help her children embrace their unique nature, Hana moves the family from the city to a peaceful rural area where they can grow up freely.
I absolutely adore Wolf Children! It really struck a chord with me because it beautifully captures the wild, unpredictable side of being a parent – it’s like Ame and Yuki, the wolf children, are childhood itself! It’s a really mature story, and honestly, it’s a tearjerker in the best way possible. If you loved Mari Okada’s Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms, you’ll definitely connect with this one; it explores the joys and sorrows of parenthood with such honesty and heart.
Your Name has Been the Best Anime Romance Film for Over a Decade
Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name was a huge success, earning over $380 million worldwide thanks to its beautiful animation and touching story. The 2016 film centers on Mitsuha and Taki, who mysteriously begin swapping bodies every other night. As they develop feelings for each other, they discover the reason behind their strange connection.
Though their unusual connection started as something funny, Taki soon discovered he needed to prevent a disaster from happening in Mitsuha’s peaceful town. This became even harder when he learned the problem wasn’t distance, but time itself. Your Name is a special and unforgettable romance, still captivating audiences today with its stunning visuals and exciting story.
