As a devoted cinema-goer and follower of the music industry, I was deeply disturbed to learn about the recent allegations against Diplo, the renowned producer and DJ. The accusations leveled against him in this new lawsuit are truly alarming and heartbreaking. The fact that he is alleged to have distributed revenge porn without consent is a violation of basic human rights and decency.
A new lawsuit accuses producer Diplo of distributing revenge porn.
A California woman identified as Jane Doe submitted a complaint on Thursday, alleging that musician Diplo (Thomas Wesley Pentz’s real name) shared sexually explicit content featuring her without her permission.
Representatives for Diplo did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Diplo is an exceptional producer and DJ whose popularity soared through collaborations with big names like Skrillex, Justin Bieber, and Usher, to name a few. He’s a frequent headliner at both electronic dance music (EDM) and country festivals, having even hosted his own showcase at the Stagecoach country music festival in April.
The lawsuit claims that a woman residing in New York had a prolonged intimate connection with Diplo from 2016 to 2023. According to the document, this woman expressed her disapproval on multiple occasions, asking Diplo not to secretly record their sexual encounters without her permission or share such records with others. She never granted him authorization to do so.
In November 2023, a stranger unknown to Jane Doe allegedly informed the Plaintiff that they had sexually explicit media of Jane Doe and Defendant Diplo.
From 2018 to 2023, Defendant Diplo secretly recorded videos of himself having sex with the Plaintiff, without their mutual agreement. He subsequently transmitted these recordings to unnamed individuals, using text messaging and Snapchat as means of distribution.
In my critique as a moviegoer, I’d express it this way: Back in November 2023, I, Jane Doe, took action and filed a police report against Diplo with the New York Police Department.
The plaintiff has been and will further experience profound mental anguish and distress, as well as physical symptoms such as anxiety and depression, due to the exposure and dissemination of private images and videos showing her during intimate moments involving her genitals and face. (Note: This paraphrased version aims to convey the same meaning while using simpler and more natural language.)
As a film enthusiast, I’ve been following the news regarding Diplo’s past allegations with great concern. In 2021, a woman named Shelly Auguste filed a lawsuit against him in Los Angeles. According to the suit, I, Diplo, had approached her for sexual encounters when she was underage. This is something I unequivocally deny and find deeply disturbing.
In 2021, Diplo disputed Auguste’s allegations through an Instagram post. Then, in the following year, a court ruling granted Diplo $1.2 million in damages after finding that Auguste’s social media content breached the conditions of their mutual restraining order. Diplo’s legal representative, Bryan J. Freedman, shared with Pitchfork last year that Diplo would defend himself against Auguste’s defamation, harassment, and attacks, just as he had done in previous instances, and ultimately emerge victorious.
Auguste’s suit against Diplo is set for a civil trial in January.
