Travis Kelce’s surprise bit on Taylor Swift’s stage was his idea: ‘Do not drop the baby’

As a huge fan of both Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, I was absolutely thrilled to hear about his surprise appearance on her Eras tour last weekend! Travis’s unexpected turn as a backup dancer during the “Tortured Poets Department” interlude at Wembley Stadium was not only a fun and playful addition to the show, but it also showcased his unique personality and versatility.

Last weekend, Travis Kelce swapped out his football cleats for a top hat and surprised everyone by joining Taylor Swift onstage during her Eras tour. This unexpected appearance was all his own idea.

On the “New Heights” podcast, which aired on Wednesday, the tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs spoke openly about his unexpected visit to Wembley Stadium. His older brother, Jason, acted as an enthusiastic interviewer, eagerly questioning his younger sibling about his role as a backup dancer.

As a film enthusiast, I’d put it this way: “It’s quite out of character for me. I’m not one for the limelight.” Despite my knack for being in the spotlight, be it on the football field or at prestigious events like the White House, I usually prefer to keep a lower profile.

He first brought up the idea to Tay, joking, “What if I rode one of the bikes for a ‘1989’-style look?” He continued. Upon hearing this, Tay laughed and asked, “Are you really considering doing something so outlandish?”

The answer: absolutely.

He expressed surprise and excitement, exclaiming, “Really? I’d be thrilled to do that! I’ve been to the Eras VIP tent so many times, I might as well join in and contribute.”

Travis and his partner reconsidered their plan of riding bikes together; they were worried that Travis might encounter a dancer named Kameron Saunders or Jan Ravnik. Instead, Travis participated with them in the “Tortured Poets Department” interlude. During this segment, the men prepared a marionette-like Taylor for her next song using silent film techniques.

Travis described that segment of the show as delightfully entertaining and the ideal moment for him to join in the fun. He engaged with Kam, Jan, and the audience, aiming to keep everyone energized for what was coming next. The experience was tremendously enjoyable for him.

As a movie-loving onlooker, I’d recount it this way: The unexpected turn of events wasn’t devoid of peril. I found myself holding onto the “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” vocalist and carrying her across the stage. Fortunately, my past experience in football came in handy.

He emphasized the importance of carefully transporting his baby sister, saying, “I had to remind myself not to drop Taylor while making my way to the couch. This was our top priority.” They described the situation as similar to carrying a valuable football during an important game.

During his triumphant moment, Travis revealed that the words of Eric Bieniemy, former Chiefs offensive coordinator, echoed in his mind. He remembered Bieniemy telling them, “That ball represents our dreams, ambitions, and hopes – you must not let it fall.”

That wasn’t the only football connection onstage that night either.

“In Kansas City, Travis and Kam’s brother, Khalen Saunders, and I were teammates and won two Super Bowls together,” Travis shared, expressing his deep affection for Khalen by labeling him as one of his “most cherished teammates.” He was thrilled about the unexpected opportunity to not only dominate the football field with Khalen but also share a stage with his brother.

Travis acknowledged that the applause following a touchdown in Kansas City lasts longer than the reception he got in London. However, he defended the crowd at the Eras tour by explaining, “It took a moment for everyone to understand what was happening.”

“The camera focused on Kam, Jan, and I as we made our way onto the stage. That experience took me by surprise,” he explained.

Travis remarked, “You underestimate how large that stage is.” Jason compared its size to a football field in length.

“Travis expressed that it was much larger than he had anticipated. He felt insignificant amidst its grandeur, yet found it incredible. What mattered most to him was not letting down Taylor with his performance.”

Travis said he loved being part of the spectacle.

“For them to be up for it and to help me along and look like a pro, it was awesome,” he said.

As a movie buff, I’d put it this way: Swift may not be gearing up for the Chiefs any time in the near future, but Travis hasn’t completely shut the door on performing with his ladylove again.

“Who knows, might not be the last time!”
