The Boys retitles season finale, adds warning following attempted Trump assassination

As a die-hard fan of The Boys, I’ve been eagerly anticipating each new season, savoring every satirical jab at the superhero genre and societal issues. The show has always pushed boundaries and tackled controversial topics head-on, making it one of my must-watch TV shows.

Editor’s Note: This post contains SPOILERS for the season 4 finale of The Boys.

The Boys is one of the few TV shows on right now that I think of as a satire first. From the start, it was always taking aim at Disney, at the superhero movie boom, at the rise in right-wing extremism, and increasingly at Donald Trump, who’s been paralleled with the unstable Homelander since the start. There’s a narrative that’s emerged this season that The Boys has become “too political,” and it baffles me. The show was always like this.

As someone who closely follows the world of politics and entertainment, I can’t help but be intrigued by the recent events unfolding around former President Donald Trump and the fictional world of “The Boys.” Having grown up in a household where news was a constant background noise, I’ve become accustomed to keeping abreast of current events.

In the episode, the singer doesn’t meet his demise, but given the sensitivity surrounding presidential assassination plots following recent real-life events, the producers decided to rename the episode as the season finale and include a “viewer discretion advised” warning at the beginning. They also released this statement on Instagram:

The season finale of The Boys contains scenes of fictional political violence, which some viewers may find disturbing, especially in light of the injuries and tragic loss of life sustained during the assassination attempt on former President Trump. The Boys is a fictitious series that was filmed in 2023, and any scene or plotline similarities to these real-world events are coincidental and unintentional. Amazon, Sony Pictures Television and the producers of The Boys reject, in the strongest terms, real-world violence of any kind.

In the last episode, Homelander took over as the United States’ unofficial president, and he plans to use his team of superheroes to establish a harsh new rule. Given current events and Amazon’s release of the fifth and final season, it seems there will be many similarities to observe. Additional content warnings may be necessary.

That new poster bears some resemblance to an image from The Boys comics by Garth Ennis:

Based on my experience as a dedicated fan of this particular show, I can’t give you an exact date for when the final season will be released, but I have a strong feeling it might take another two years. Having followed the production process closely, I’ve learned that creating high-quality television takes time and patience. So while I eagerly await each new episode, I’m prepared for a potentially lengthy wait. If Amazon manages to surprise us all and air the final episodes in 2025, I’d be thrilled and impressed by their efficiency and commitment to delivering a satisfying conclusion to this beloved series.
