As a film enthusiast and someone who has seen my fair share of performances, both on-screen and live, I can’t help but feel for Ingrid Andress in this situation. Her recent performance at the MLB All-Star Home Run Derby, which went viral for all the wrong reasons, is a stark reminder of the pressure and vulnerability that comes with being in the public eye.
On Monday, Grammy-nominated artist Ingrid Andress caused a stir on social media after her unsteady rendition of the national anthem at the MLB All-Star Home Run Derby drew criticism and mockery. However, she has since clarified, “That wasn’t me performing last night.”
I’m a 32-year-old country music artist, and I recently had a moment that went viral. In an open Instagram post, I admitted, “I was tipsy last night,” and I’ve decided it’s time for me to take care of myself. So, today, I’ll be checking myself into a facility to receive the assistance I require.
At the beginning of the Home Run Derby, which took place at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, Andress started things off by singing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” However, her performance faced issues right from the start, as seen in videos shared on social media.
In my critique as a moviegoer, Andress pushes herself to reach loftier tones in her delivery, yet falls short, flat, and gasping for air. From the sidelines at Citizen’s Bank Park, Alec Bohm of the Philadelphia Phillies, a derby entrant, was unintentionally captured on camera attempting to stifle a chuckle.
A number of social media users found Andress’ performance, complete with out-of-key strums, quite challenging to listen to.
“User X on social media introduced Ingrid, who was noted for being unable to sing, with a caution for dogs not to listen. Amused players reportedly suppressed their giggles.”
A user among the second group of X fans playfully remarked that Andress’ rendition of the national anthem successfully brought people from different political backgrounds closer together. In contrast, another X user strongly criticized Andress, branding her a source of shame and making derogatory comments about her outfit. Additionally, some other X users drew parallels between Andress and Roseanne Barr and Fergie, both of whom infamously mishandled the “Star-Spangled Banner” in 1990 and 2018 respectively.
As a devoted cinemagoer, I’d put it this way: I noticed some folks showing more understanding towards Andrés’ perspective, while others gently dismissed her harsh critiques and gave her acting a pass despite its rugged edges.
“Performing this song is quite a challenge, as it was for political commentator Travis Akers, with an audience of thousands in person and millions more at home,” is one way to paraphrase this statement.
“She was nervous,” another X user said. “Wish her well in the future.”
Andress, under contract with Atlantic Records and Warner Music Nashville, is no longer a newcomer when it comes to entertaining large audiences. In the summer of 2022, she showcased her talents on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and dropped her second album, titled “Good Person,” that very same month.
In the year 2023, Andress gave a captivating performance at NPR’s esteemed “Tiny Desk” concert series and initiated her Good Person Tour. This extensive tour included visits to cities such as Los Angeles, Boston, Paris, and Berlin, alongside other major venues. Additionally, Andress was invited to be the opening act for Stevie Nicks during numerous shows on the renowned Fleetwood Mac singer’s tour.
Andress has been nominated for a grand total of four Grammy Awards. She secured her initial three nods in the years 2021, specifically in the categories of country album, country song, and new artist. In the year 2023, she gained another nomination, this time for the country duo/group performance category, for her track “Wishful Drinking.”
On Taylor’s apology to the MLB, the fans, and the country he cherishes deeply, which occurred on a Tuesday, he expressed his remorse.
She added: “I’ll let y’all know how rehab is I hear it’s super fun.”
