Lenny Kravitz answers video call from ‘big brother’ Denzel Washington onstage in Italy

As a dedicated cinephile and music lover, I cannot help but be utterly captivated by the heartwarming bond shared between Lenny Kravitz and Denzel Washington. Their friendship is a beautiful testament to the power of connection and the unbreakable bonds that can form between two individuals with shared interests and mutual respect.

During a surprise pause in Lenny Kravitz’s performance in Italy, he took a moment to answer a call from his friend Denzel Washington.

“Denzel Washington is my older brother and he gave me a call to greet me, I apologize for the interruption,” Kravitz shared with the audience on Friday at the Umbra Jazz Festival.

At that instant, the artist behind “Fly Away” displayed a beaming image of Washington to the audience, who responded with jubilant cheers. “Alright, my friend,” Kravitz expressed affectionately, “I’ll give you a call soon.” Afterward, he concluded the conversation.

As someone who has been in the limelight for quite some time, I can relate to Kravitz’s experience of receiving an unexpected call during a live performance. The pressure to balance personal and professional commitments is a common challenge that many public figures face. In this instance, Kravitz had to make a quick decision – should he answer the call and potentially disrupt the show or let it go to voicemail? I imagine the internal struggle was real, especially since he’s in the middle of putting on a great performance for his audience. Ultimately, the bond between siblings is strong, and Kravitz chose to prioritize family over momentary stage success. It takes a lot of courage and grace to handle such situations, and Kravitz showed both in his actions.

In March, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was bestowed upon the four-time Grammy Award recipient. The esteemed “TK421” vocalist was accompanied by his daughter, actress Zoe Kravitz, and Washington during this momentous occasion. As he delivered his speech prior to the unveiling, the “Training Day” actor reminisced about their three-decade-long camaraderie with the musician.

“He’s more than just a friend or a brother to me. We’re not twins in appearance, but our bond is as strong as that of twin brothers. We’ve been close friends for around thirty years now. I met him when he was only seven years old. God has endowed him with an extraordinary talent, but his heart is even more remarkable. He’s generous and loving. Lenny Kravitz and I are not just friends; we’re brothers. I have a deep affection for Lenny Kravitz that surpasses any other brotherly love I have experienced in my life.”

Back in 2002, I had the honor of presenting Denzel Washington with an award at the GQ Men of the Year event. Our friendship blossomed from that night onwards in Hollywood.

In 2014, the two of them joined David Letterman on “The Late Show” and discussed an enjoyable boat voyage they had experienced along Italy’s stunning Amalfi Coast. During this trip, they watched numerous films featuring Washington.

I was amazed by Denzel’s work ethic when I spoke with him, Letterman. He doesn’t merely watch the finished product of his movies; instead, he immerses himself completely in their creation. However, I managed to persuade him into watching all of his own films.

“We didn’t watch them all,” Washington said.

“Yes we did … ‘John Q,’ ‘Man on Fire,’ ‘Malcolm X’ … We watched them all,” Kravitz said.

Kravitz carries on with his “Blue Electric Light” tour, selling out at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland on a Tuesday, followed by a performance in the Czech Republic three days afterwards.
