Emma Roberts says critics of nepo babies ‘don’t see all the rejection along the way’

As a supporter and someone who believes in Emma Roberts’ journey, I can’t help but be in awe of her resilience and determination in the face of adversity. Her life experience is a testament to the fact that nepo babies, or individuals with connections to the entertainment industry, also face rejection and hardships along their career paths.

Emma Roberts believes the public has an oversimplified view of nepo babies.

The acting career of “Scream Queens” star, who is the daughter of Oscar-nominated Eric Roberts and niece of Oscar-winner Julia Roberts in Hollywood, can be seen as having both advantages and disadvantages.

“She pointed out during the most recent episode of ‘Table for Two’ podcast by Bruce Bozzi, that while some people may argue you gain an advantage due to family connections in the industry, it’s important to remember that you still need to demonstrate your capabilities.”

At the age of 9, Roberts appeared in her first film, “Blow,” portraying the role of Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz’s on-screen daughter. When she was 13 years old, she landed her breakthrough part as Addie Singer in the popular Nickelodeon comedy series “Unfabulous.”

Lately, she has formed a productive collaboration with Ryan Murphy. They have worked together on various seasons of the acclaimed FX anthology series “American Horror Story.”

“I’ve always wanted to work and have a sense of purpose,” she told Grazia in 2023.

Still, the actor’s career has not come without its setbacks, she said on “Table for Two.”

Roberts pointed out that people often focus solely on one’s accomplishments, failing to recognize the numerous setbacks and rejections experienced along the journey to success.

She also mentioned that she makes an effort to be open about the parts she doesn’t get cast in, as people may assume her career has been smooth sailing and uninterrupted when in reality, it’s quite the opposite. From the outside view or to those unfamiliar with the industry, it might seem like a straight path to success.

The actor brought attention to the sex bias in nepotism discussions, pointing out that male actors like George Clooney, who is the nephew of Emmy-nominated and Grammy Lifetime Achievement award-winning artist-actor Rosemary Clooney, face less criticism than young women.

“Roberts expressed that people are drawn to stories of sudden fame and success. If you aren’t one of those ‘rags-to-riches’ types, there can be a dismissive reaction like ‘Oh, well, you had this advantage.'””

Occasionally, Roberts expressed that Hollywood may not be suitable for her – “either because I choose to step back or due to the industry’s decision” – yet she has grown more self-assured as she has gotten older.

“I feel so lucky that I get to be 33 and still get to be doing things that I love,” she said.

Roberts’ upcoming movie “Space Cadet,” which she helps oversee as an executive producer, will be released on Prime Video on July 4. She described the romantic comedy as having a nostalgic feel and resembling fish-out-of-water stories, like “Legally Blonde” and “Private Benjamin.”
