As a seasoned movie critic with over two decades of experience in the industry, I have seen my fair share of breathtaking displays, but nothing quite compares to the Macy’s 4th of July fireworks show. Having grown up in New York City, the annual event has always held a special place in my heart.
In the unexplored expanse of the Mojave Desert, a handful of people convened to trial run newly developed fireworks for the upcoming 4th of July celebration in New York City at Macy’s.
In late June, there’s a crucial test close to Lucerne Valley. This is one of the last steps in the extensive planning procedure for the biggest fireworks display in the country, which has been underway for almost a year.
As the summer sun finally set, the control table began to count down: three … two … one. Fire.
Boom.
A single firework lit up the sky.
A chorus of “wows” followed as it slowly dissipated.
I’ve been to many firework displays in my life, but none quite compared to the one I witnessed that night. The team didn’t just launch one or two fireworks; they kept going for over an hour, each one unique and breathtakingly beautiful. Some were large and boomed with a deep rumble, while others exploded into a rainbow of colors. A few even split apart mid-air, creating smaller fireworks that danced across the night sky. Each explosion was a work of art, and I felt privileged to be a part of the magical moment. It was a truly unforgettable experience that left me in awe of the creativity and passion behind such an spectacular display.
As an assistant to Will Coss, the executive producer of the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks, I can tell you that our objective during the test was to perfectly synchronize the ignition of the fireworks with the music. Last Monday night, in the desert, we put this plan into action by trying out over 200 newly manufactured shells. This is just a sneak peek of what the audience will witness on Independence Day.

Approximately one-third of the firework designs that Gary Souza, the mastermind behind Pyro Spectaculars by Souza, was evaluating had never been seen before in the US.
Gary and his brother Jim belong to the fourth generation in our century-old family business. The upcoming generations, specifically the fifth and sixth generations, joined us for the event as well.
Souza and Macy’s have been working together for decades; the teams are in “lockstep,” Coss said.
“It’s really evolved into more of a friendship,” said Jim, who’s president and CEO of the company.
The Souza team spends the whole year meeting with pyrotechnics manufacturers worldwide.
Jim expressed that it’s not just an old saying that we prepare for a new year in advance. Instead, he plans to evaluate this show, possibly even tonight, to determine what needs improvement and will get in touch with the manufacturers right away. Whether it means ordering more of a successful item or making adjustments for next year, he intends to act promptly based on his findings.
For nearly 50 years, the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks display has been a tradition on Independence Day. This year, marking its 48th edition, will include over 60,000 explosives for a quarter-hour long spectacle. In 2021, Macy’s introduced New York City’s inaugural live drone show as part of the festivities.
As someone who has attended numerous fireworks displays over the years, I am thrilled to learn that Macy’s and Souza are taking innovation to new heights this year. The idea of witnessing the nation’s first-ever fireworks show on drones is truly exhilarating. Having grown up with traditional firework shows, I can only imagine the unique experience that this modern take will bring. It’s fascinating how technology continues to advance and transform our beloved traditions. The recent approval by the Federal Aviation Administration adds to the excitement, as it marks a significant milestone in the world of pyrotechnics. I can’t wait to see the spectacular display that Macy’s and Souza have in store for us!
“According to Gary, Macy’s continually strives to grow and improve. Their goal is to deliver the best possible experience for their American customers.”
During the 25-minute pyrotechnic show, let’s stand together, strangers and loved ones alike, and enjoy a shared experience of happiness, inspiration, introspection, and appreciation for artistic brilliance. (Coss’s statement)

After the usual fireworks show, the team ventured deeper into the desert. It was now past ten o’clock, and team members gathered before a 5×5 drone exhibition, maintaining a safe distance.
“We’re hoping to do something that’s never been done in America,” Gary said.
The worker checked and maintained the drones, replacing any malfunctioning ones with correct settings. Once the control station gave its approval, the team prepared to proceed.
Drones ascended simultaneously, displaying the patriotic hues of red, white, and blue. Once they reached the ideal altitude, fireworks ignited.
Once again, a chorus of “wows” and cheers sped through the small but excited team.
The test was a success. Macy’s is on track to bring pyro-drones to a U.S. audience.
Each year, the show takes place in various parts of New York City. Spectators have been treated to firework displays at renowned sites like the Brooklyn Bridge and the Empire State Building. For the past decade, the event has been located on the East River. However, this year’s edition will be held on the Hudson River instead.
For the past ten years, we’ve lived on the eastern side of New York City. Now, we believe it’s time to bring a taste of this wonderful tradition we’ve experienced to our friends residing on the western side.
He also said the Hudson River location gives them room to play with larger shells.
According to Varity’s report, the number of viewers for the event on Peacock last year was twice as many as in 2022. Additionally, the viewership for the 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. broadcasts on NBC increased as well.
As a movie critic, I constantly strive to enhance your cinematic experience. Each year, I aim to captivate more audiences, generate greater excitement, and integrate advanced technologies into our productions. Fireworks are just the beginning!
On the Fourth of July, I’ll be part of an exciting event where Lainey Wilson and Tanner Adell, renowned country artists, as well as Luis Fonsi, the beloved “Despacito” singer, and the talented husband-and-wife duo the War and Treaty, will entertain us with live performances. This year’s fireworks will be perfectly synchronized to an impressive score, skillfully created by Jason Howland – a renowned composer who has made his mark on Broadway with productions like “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” and “Little Women.”
Raised in New York City from birth, Coss considers his current role and the chance to present the legendary performance as the fulfillment of a cherished dream.
In New York City, there’s just one Fourth of July celebration. We’re thankful and lucky to be the team responsible for making it happen.
