John Corbett says he picked the ‘wrong thing to do’ with his life: ‘It’s just a fact’

As a movie critic with a deep appreciation for the journeys and experiences of actors, I can’t help but be moved by John Corbett‘s candid reflection on his career in acting during his recent interview on the “Fly on the Wall” podcast. With over 30 years of experience under his belt, Corbett has come to a poignant realization: he may have picked the wrong path for his creative fulfillment.

John Corbett expresses remorse over his decision to pursue an acting career, having spent over three decades in Hollywood.

The actor openly shared his feelings of dissatisfaction with acting during a visit on the “Fly on the Wall” podcast, which is hosted by comedians Dana Carvey and David Spade.

“Currently, I’m in the final stage of both my football game and my career in life and entertainment. This is simply how things are. Consequently, I must confess that I made a regrettable decision regarding my life’s path.”

At a recent interview, the 63-year-old actor expressed his deep regret, rooted in a longtime dislike for individuals in power and the limited ability he has had throughout his acting career to shape his artistic vision.

“From a young age, I’ve disliked being ordered around by any figure in authority. My career choice is something I’ve pursued for personal satisfaction, but it feels like I’m constantly being told: ‘Stand here, say this, wear this, look that way, speak faster, get a haircut like this.’ It leaves me feeling like a manipulated puppet.”

The “Sex and the City” actor shared his wish to have a greater role in shaping his personal initiatives, citing Emma Stone as an inspiration. Her impactful contributions to movies like “Cruella” and “The Crooked House” were highlighted by him.

I’ve had my fair share of success in life. I can afford a beautiful home and dine at the finest restaurants. People recognize me and often approach me for conversation. I’ve traveled the world, met incredible people, and experienced things many only dream of. Yet, despite this external prosperity, I’ve found my creative endeavors lacking.

Corbett’s acting career took an unexpected turn while he was pursuing a hairdressing education at Cerritos College. His first television appearance was as a guest star on “The Wonder Years” in 1988, leading him to gain significant acclaim with the role of Chris Stevens in “Northern Exposure.” This part brought him multiple award nominations for Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG. Subsequently, he continued to excel with notable performances in “Sex and the City,” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” and “United States of Tara.”

In 2020, Corbett wed his long-term companion Bo Derek. Besides acting, he has dabbled in various artistic ventures. Notably, he delved into the realm of country music and released two albums: “John Corbett” (2006) and “Leaving Nothin’ Behind” (2013).
