I have always been fascinated by the complex and intriguing life of Shannen Doherty. Her journey from a rebellious teenager on the set of “Beverly Hills, 90210” to a successful actress on shows like “Charmed,” has been marked by both triumphs and challenges.
Shannen Doherty, the iconic ’90s actress known for her rebellious spirit and starring roles in hit TV shows “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Charmed,” passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer at the age of 53.
Last Saturday, Doherty passed away, according to her representative Leslie Sloan who announced this to The Times. Previously, in June, she disclosed that her cancer had advanced to her brain, and by November, it had reached her bones as well.
“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty,” Sloane said.
On Saturday, July 13, after a long and courageous fight against cancer, Sloane sadly announced that her beloved one had passed away. She was a dedicated daughter, sister, aunt, and friend who was cherished by all. Her family was with her during her last moments, including her faithful companion, Bowie. At this difficult time, the family kindly requests space for their private mourning.
In 2015, the actress from “90210” made her breast cancer diagnosis known to the public for the first time. This revelation came alongside a lawsuit against her previous management company. She accused them of breaking their contractual obligations and negligence. The firm was alleged to have let her health insurance expire in 2014, preventing her from re-enrolling in insurance benefits until the following year.
By March 2015, I sadly learned that my breast cancer had spread to at least one lymph node and could potentially spread further while I was uninsured and therefore unable to see a doctor.
Back in 2017, I, as a movie buff and follower of the actor’s career, was moved by his heartfelt Instagram post. He announced that his cancer had gone into remission but warned us all, speaking from experience as a fellow member of the cancer community, about the importance of the next five years. He emphasized that relapses are common and so he was left waiting with a more hopeful yet cautious heart.
Four years following Doherty’s first breast cancer diagnosis, during the filming of Fox’s “Beverly Hills, 90210” reboot, she received devastating news that her cancer had advanced to Stage 4. Despite this, she chose to conceal her illness for almost a year.
“Doherty shared on ‘Good Morning America’ in February 2020 that her cancer had returned. This news was tough to accept, leaving her questioning ‘why me?’ at times. Yet, she also wondered ‘why not me?’ and recognized that no one is exempt from hardships.”
In June 2023, the actor openly showed the harsh realities of cancer through a video posted at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. With tears streaming down her face, Doherty donned a radiotherapy mask for her initial radiation session, disclosing that her cancer had progressed to her brain.
She openly expressed her anxiety in the post. With a severe case of claustrophobia, her life was already hectic, as depicted in the video she shared. The video revealed what cancer could appear like.
By November 2023, Doherty shared with People that her cancer had advanced to her bones. Four days prior to Thanksgiving, she expressed to the magazine, “I don’t want to die. There’s still so much I haven’t accomplished. I haven’t finished loving, creating, and making a difference in the world. I’m simply not done yet.”
Doherty was born on April 12, 1971, in Memphis, Tennessee, as the younger child of Tom and Rosa Doherty. Raised in a Southern Baptist household, she later moved with her family to the wealthy Palos Verdes Peninsula in Los Angeles County when she was six years old. Doherty attributed her confident demeanor to the gender disparities she observed in the South during the 1970s. (Paraphrased version)
As a passionate cinemagoer, I recall vividly the way women were portrayed back in 1992. I couldn’t help but feel disrespected and devalued by this depiction. Consequently, I made a firm decision then and there: I wouldn’t allow myself to be treated in such a manner.
When the Doherty family had moved to the West Coast, Doherty participated in a church play at the age of 10. Surprisingly, an Hollywood agent was present at that performance, having been invited by the play’s director. Impressed by the young girl’s talent, the agent quickly arranged for her to make her commercial debut for a telephone company just a few short weeks later.
In an interview with the Orange County Register in 1995, Doherty shared that his parents didn’t express much excitement about his pursuit of a career in show business, but he himself was deeply passionate about it.
At the age of 11, Doherty got her first significant acting gig as Jenny Wilder, the brave and lively character in “Little House on the Prairie,” which was offered to her by Michael Landon. According to her interview with that publication, this TV series had a profound impact on her life. Landon also encouraged her during that time to stand up for herself and always be a strong woman.
During her teenage years, Doherty’s dark locks and carefree attitude made her a natural fit for playing rebellious characters, like Heather Duke in the 1988 black comedy “Heathers.” However, it was her portrayal of the ambitious newcomer Brenda Walsh on “Beverly Hills, 90210,” created by Aaron Spelling, that propelled her to fame.
During the period when programming targeted at teenagers was generally innocent and uneventful, the Fox show about wealthy adolescents residing in one of the nation’s priciest ZIP codes started shaping the modern teen drama genre. This groundbreaking series tackled the societal and sexual challenges of high school in a way that was unprecedented at the time. The program ran for 10 seasons, leading to the successful spin-off “Melrose Place,” the CW adaptation “90210,” and eventually a 2019 revival titled “BH90210,” which brought back the original cast to portray heightened versions of themselves as they attempted to revive the prime-time soap.
During the ’90s, the fandom around this series was extraordinarily intense, significantly influencing how Doherty handled her widespread recognition. In its initial stages, the angst-filled teen drama featured Doherty alongside Tori Spelling, Jason Priestley, Luke Perry, Brian Austin Green, Jennie Garth, Gabrielle Carteris, and Ian Ziering. This ensemble of heartthrob teen idols, with Doherty standing out, became prime tabloid material.
In a 1991 article for The Times during the Emmys red carpet event, it was noted that the heartthrobs of Fox’s “Beverly Hills, 90210” – Jason Priestley and Shannen Doherty – drew the most excitement from the teenage fans who had gathered. When they arrived together, they were swarmed by photographers, just like their co-star Luke Perry was.

While her TV persona was handling challenges such as losing virginity and flunking driving tests, Doherty herself was gaining a notorious off-screen image as a wild partier. She frequently stayed out late with co-star Tori Spelling at shuttered nightspots like Hollywood’s Roxbury. Her on-set relationships were strained, particularly with Jennie Garth; however, they later became close friends in real life.
“People magazine’s June 1993 cover headline exclaimed, ‘Uncontainable!’ referring to an enclosed article about Doherty.”
“Doherty made headlines for accumulating financial debts, damaging properties, draining friendships, and ruining relationships since joining ‘90210’ in 1990. According to sources, she may react aggressively when confronted, reportedly saying, ‘You don’t realize who you’re messing with!'”
During her young adulthood and amidst growing fame, Doherty’s romantic relationships made headlines frequently. In the spring of 1993, she got engaged to Dean Jay Factor, a cosmetics heir, but they split up publicly just a few months later in a messy fashion. Later that year, in October, she married Ashley Hamilton, George Hamilton’s son, after only knowing him for a short time. However, their marriage ended in divorce just six months afterward.
Instead of “but,” we could use “however” or “despite”: However, those who worked closely with the “90210” star disregarded the rumors and commended the actor instead. In 1992, Priestley, who portrayed Doherty’s brother Brandon on the show, spoke to People magazine and refuted the allegations against his castmate. He described her as a bright and bold young woman.
Aaron Spelling praised her to the media as “an exceptional young actress I’ve come across in a while.” He also noted her sincere nature, sharing that she openly displays her feelings. When asked a straightforward question, she responds truthfully.
Along with her acting partner Tori Spelling (Donna Martin in the show), expressed similar thoughts as Doherty’s father, yet mentioned that Doherty’s public image slightly affected her emotions.
Back in 1994, I reported that Doherty parted ways with “90210” under cloudy circumstances, sparking whispers of disagreements with executive producer Spelling. Yet, as is often the case with Hollywood gossip, Spelling dismissed these claims and welcomed Doherty back into her orbit four years later, casting her in the role of a kindly witch on “Charmed,” which airs on The CW.
Based on my understanding of the situation, it seems to me that Shannen Doherty’s reputation may have been exaggerated in the media back in 1998. From what I gather, she did encounter some tardiness issues on the set of “Beverly Hills, 90210,” but who among us hasn’t had the occasional late arrival? Contrary to popular belief, she was not dismissed from the show; instead, she opted to explore other opportunities. And guess what? She landed a role in “Charmed” shortly afterward. If Shannen and the producers had real issues with each other, why on earth would they collaborate once more? It’s clear that there might have been some misunderstandings or miscommunications, but the truth is not as black and white as it was portrayed at the time. Having worked in the entertainment industry myself, I know firsthand how rumors can snowball and create a distorted image of people and their careers. So let’s remember that behind every public figure is a complex, multifaceted individual whose experiences extend far beyond what we read in the headlines.
I had the privilege of portraying Prue Halliwell on “Charmed” from 1998 to 2001, acting alongside Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs in this captivating series that continued until 2006. Sadly, my character met her end at the conclusion of Season 3. Once more, there were whispers of tension on set surrounding the unfortunate demise of Prue.
She shared with “Entertainment Tonight” following her departure, “The set was filled with excessive theatrics instead of genuine dedication to our projects.”
In March 1994 and nearly ten years later in December 2003, Doherty graced the cover of Playboy magazine. By this point in her life, she described it as being much more tranquil. Her interests had shifted towards animal rights activism and supporting organizations like the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. She enjoyed staying home, took pleasure in interior design projects, and spent time riding horses. Simultaneously, she continued to act in television and film productions.
In an interview with Playboy back in 2003, she shared that she wished she could have been more reserved at times and lived a more private life. But her preference is to fully experience life, even if it means not always conforming to others’ expectations. She has been vocal about her views throughout her life, believing that taking a stand and living authentically holds merit. Despite having regrets, she remains unapologetic.
The “Charmed” actress got hitched to professional poker player Rick Salomon in 2002, but they annulled the marriage just nine months later. On October 15, 2011, she exchanged vows with celebrity photographer Kurt Iswarienko in an extravagant Malibu wedding ceremony. After spending 11 years together and going through her cancer struggles, they revealed their intention to divorce in 2023.
After being diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago, Doherty looked back on her journey and her remarkable resilience.
As a movie buff, I value each tiny moment that often goes unnoticed or disregarded by many. These little details hold significant meaning for me. We all carry an infinite source of resilience inside us, it’s just about delving deeper to draw upon that strength during challenging times. And in doing so, we are rewarded with the opportunity to appreciate the breathtaking beauty around us.
Doherty is survived by her mother, Rosa Doherty, and brother, Sean Doherty.
