As a movie buff and someone who has had the pleasure of witnessing Bill Cobbs’ extraordinary acting career unfold over the decades, I am deeply saddened by his passing at the age of 90. His legacy in film and television is truly remarkable, with nearly 200 credits to his name.
Veteran actor Bill Cobbs, boasting almost 200 roles in films and TV productions, passed away at the age of 90.
Bill Cobbs’ passing was announced by his brother Thomas G. Cobbs on Facebook. On June 25, Bill peacefully died at his California home, reaching the age of 90. Adored as a partner, older brother, uncle, surrogate parent, and godfather, Bill had just joyfully celebrated his birthday with treasured family members.
I’m glad to share that as a family, we find solace in the thought that Bill is now at peace with our Heavenly Father. We humbly request your prayers and support as we navigate through this challenging time.
Chuck I. Jones, the spokesperson for Cobb, confirmed his death through an email to The Times, stating that it was due to natural reasons.
I had the pleasure of knowing Bill, both as a remarkable individual and an exceptional actor. His kindness, generosity, and consideration for others shone through in every interaction. Among his many accomplishments, he was deeply proud of receiving a Daytime Emmy Award. This achievement, along with his collaborations on films like “Demolition Man,” “The Bodyguard,” and “Oz, the Great and Powerful” with his cast and crew, held a special place in his heart.
Bill Cobbs was born on June 16, 1934, in Cleveland. After spending eight years in the Air Force and holding jobs at IBM and as a car salesman, he decided to move to New York when he was 36 with the goal of pursuing an acting career. According to IMDb, his early roles were in television and theater productions. It wasn’t until 1974 that he made his debut in a feature film, appearing in the crime thriller “The Taking of Pelham One Two Three.”
Cobs is recognized for his roles in films such as “Air Bud” (1997) and “Demolition Man” (1993), where he acted alongside Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner in “The Bodyguard” (1992). He also portrayed Reginald in the “Night at the Museum” series, teaming up with Mickey Rooney and Dick Van Dyke as a trio of grumpy museum security guards. In “New Jack City” (1991), he brought the Old Man character to life.
Back in 2020, I was thrilled to receive a Daytime Emmy Award for my role as Mr. Hendrickson in the captivating daytime series “Dino Dana.” It was an honor to bring this beloved character to life on screen.
Several of Cobbs’ peers offered their condolences.

Wendell Pierce, who has won a Tony Award for acting, described Cobbs as “a guiding influence, a storyteller, and a legendary artist” who impacted him deeply both on and off the set. Cobbs played Pierce’s father in two productions: “I’ll Fly Away” and “The Gregory Hines Show.” During these experiences, he shared valuable advice and words of motivation.
