Baby Reindeer’s Nava Mau in tears after making awards history
As a dedicated gamer and avid consumer of pop culture news, I was absolutely elated when I heard about Nava Mau’s historic Emmy nomination for her role as Teri in “Baby Reindeer.” I have always been an advocate for representation in media, and seeing a trans actress recognized by the Television Academy is a significant milestone that fills me with hope.
Baby Reindeer actor Nava Mau has shared her emotional response to making Emmy Awards history.
Mau acted out the role of Teri in the hugely successful Netflix show, based on true events recounted by series creator Richard Gadd regarding his own encounters with a persistent stalker. In this production, Teri is portrayed as the affectionate interest of Gadd’s character, Donny Dunn. However, both Donny and Donny’s relentless pursuer Martha (played by Jessica Gunning) bring danger to their relationship, while Donny struggles with the embarrassment surrounding his sexuality.
Mau made history as the initial trans nominee for the Emmy’s Supporting Actress classification in a Limited or Anthology Series or Film. Upon hearing about her nomination, she expressed to Deadline an emotional response filled with “profound happiness” that left her weeping for 45 minutes.
“Trans actors face limited chances to hone their skills, expand as artists, and gain acknowledgment for their true potential,” she added on.
Being a part of this show has been an invaluable journey for me. At every stage, I’ve sensed how the experience has shaped me, enriched my life, and broadened my horizons. The fact that my peers in the Academy have acknowledged this growth is a testament to the transformative power of this experience.
After her trailblazing portrayal as a trans actor, she expressed optimism about the future: “Given the chance, trans actors will not only rise to the occasion but surpass all expectations.”
Mau is listed among her “Baby Reindeer” co-star Gunning, as well as Dakota Fanning from “Ripley,” Lily Gladstone of “Under the Bridge,” and Aja Naomi King from “Lessons in Chemistry,” as potential recipients for the award. Diane Lane from “Feud: Capote vs The Swans” and Kali Reis from “True Detective: Night Country” are also contenders for the accolade.
In her Instagram post, she expressed that she had been crying inconsolably “the entire day” once she received the news, conveying her profound humility and excitement for those who were nominated. Eventually, she acknowledged, she would come to terms with this new truth.
Currently, I’m deeply grateful to the Television Academy for bestowing this wonderful accolade upon me. I’m speechless, so a heartfelt thank you seems inadequate, but it is sincerely meant.
In my perspective as a devoted fan, Mau once shared with us the true-to-life influences behind the creation of her character in “Baby Reindeer.”
During an interview with Digital Spy and other media outlets following a Q&A screening, Mau shared his observation: “When I read the script, it was clear to me that Richard deeply cared for the character who inspired him.”
Based on my personal perspective, I strongly believe that the story was grounded in reality. Its authenticity resonated deeply with me, and I felt compelled to share this representation of trans women’s lives with others. The emotional depth conveyed through Richard’s writing struck a chord within me, and I hold hope that readers will connect with it as well.
Baby Reindeer is available to stream on Netflix.
