Batman and Superman get new origins in DC Comics’ Absolute Universe

As a longtime comic book enthusiast and avid gamer of DC Universe titles, I can’t help but feel a sense of exhilaration at the news of DC Comics’ latest initiative, All In. The announcement video, featuring Scott Snyder and Joshua Williamson, brought a wave of nostalgia and excitement that transported me back to my childhood days spent poring over comic books and creating epic stories in my RPG games based on these beloved characters.

DC Comics unveiled their most significant project in over 10 years as announced by writer Scott Snyder (of Batman and Undiscovered Country fame) via a video on the official DC YouTube channel. DC’s All In encompasses the simultaneous release of new comic series, fresh storylines for ongoing titles, and an alternate DC Universe filled with revitalized and reimagined DC Comics characters.

Snyder explained that “All In” aims to bring everyone in, old and new creators included, to share their top stories with a unified starting point. This isn’t a reboot or alteration of existing stories, but rather an extension from the ending of DC’s ongoing crossover event, “Absolute Power.” Snyder and co-host Joshua Williamson (Superman, The Flash) emphasized this clarification.

The crossover event is scheduled to end on October 2nd with the release of Absolute Power #4. Following this, a special DC All In Issue #1 will be published on October 19th. This issue, which is jointly written by Williamson and Snyder, and illustrated by Daniel Sampere (Wonder Woman, Injustice 2) and Wes Craig (Deadly Class, Kaya), will explore the aftermath of Absolute Power in the main DC universe. Additionally, it will introduce a completely new universe: the Absolute Universe.

In their work “Absolute Power,” Darkseid introduced an alternate universe through unknown means, as revealed by Snyder and Williamson without giving away too much from the comic. This new universe serves as a fresh canvas for DC creators to reimagine characters such as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, allowing them to restart their stories from the beginning. This universe won’t completely replace the primary DC narrative, but it will interconnect in some way. As Snyder explained, the Absolute Universe is part of a larger story that will unfold over the coming years within the DC multiverse.

At DC Comics, the term “absolute” carries an air of grandeur. For decades, it’s been the go-to label for DC’s largest, premium hardcover and slipcased editions of their most significant titles. In this instance, Scott Snyder himself is writing Absolute Batman, with illustrations by Nick Dragotta (known for his work on East of West and Ghost Cage). According to Snyder, the Absolute Universe encompasses a more unpredictable, perilous, and untamed landscape compared to the regular DC Universe. In this universe, heroes emerge in unusual ways, necessitating greater resilience, creativity, and brilliance from them.

As a passionate fan, I’ve been eagerly following the buzz surrounding All In over the last month. Whispers and hints have been circulating, with intriguing glimpses like leaked photographs of an early design comic for Absolute Batman by Dragotta. The ashcan comic, featuring his distinctive style, has certainly piqued my curiosity. However, what truly grabbed my attention was the list of impressive talent attached to the Absolute Universe projects, as revealed in this leak. This roster might even surpass any tantalizing teasers Williamson and Snyder could offer during an official announcement.

As a huge fan of comic books, I cannot help but be in awe of the incredible roster of talented writers and artists who have graced the pages of our beloved medium. Each one brings their unique voice and perspective to the stories they create, leaving indelible marks on the industry.

Snyder expressed the company’s philosophy behind All In during the video’s conclusion: “Let’s tell our most significant stories together, be it groundbreaking character transformations or continuing epic tales set in the main DC universe – let’s bring them all to life simultaneously.”

Starting in October, Snyder noted, DC Comics will offer new stories that are great places to begin reading for anyone.
