Hunger Games Movie Franchise’s Future Gets Insight From Sunrise On The Reaping Writer

The eternal flame of theHunger Games franchise could be blown out soon.

Following the four original Hunger Games films starring Katniss Everdeen and a prequel about Coriolanus Snow, the series is coming back this year with a new story. This film will center on Haymitch Abernathy (played by Joseph Zada) and his experience winning the 50th Hunger Games. It’s based on Suzanne Collins’ book, Sunrise on the Reaping, but it’s currently unknown if Collins plans to write additional books – and therefore, if more movies will be made – beyond this one.

Billy Ray, the writer behind the first and most recent Hunger Games films, recently discussed the franchise’s future with CinemaBlend while promoting his new book, Burn the Water. He called The Hunger Games “the gold standard” but confessed he wasn’t certain if Sunrise on the Reaping would truly be the final installment.

He complimented Collins, saying she clearly puts a lot of thought and effort into her work, and that her dedicated fanbase is a testament to that.

The Hunger Games movies set the standard for quality, and I’ve been involved from the beginning as the screenwriter for both the first and the latest film. I’m not sure if this will be the last one, but I hope it isn’t. I’ve witnessed Suzanne Collins’ dedication and thoughtfulness in crafting these stories, and the incredible loyalty of her fans. That’s what we’re aiming for with these films – to live up to that standard.

The future of the Hunger Games movies depends on whether Suzanne Collins decides to write additional books. Director Francis Lawrence and producer Nina Jacobson have both stated they’ll only work on more films if Collins provides the stories. This makes it unlikely that we’ll see prequels focusing on characters like Finnick Odair or Johanna Mason, even though many fans are hoping for them.

As a huge fan of the series, I’m really excited about Suzanne Collins’ new book, Sunrise on the Reaping, which is coming out later this year! Everything points to the movie adaptation being the last Hunger Games film we’ll get, which is a little bittersweet, but I’m eager to see how they bring this story to life.

I have a feeling Suzanne Collins might be working on another story in secret! It wouldn’t surprise me if we don’t find out about it until after the new movie comes out. We saw something similar happen with Sunrise on the Reaping – it was announced out of nowhere after The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes film. Right now, she hasn’t said anything about writing more Hunger Games books, and I suspect we won’t get an answer until after the movie is released. I’m keeping my fingers crossed, though!

If Sunrise on the Reaping is the last book in The Hunger Games series, it would finish the story arc centered around victors from District 12. Before Katniss and Peeta, only two people from their district had won the Games: Haymitch and Lucy Gray Baird (played by Rachel Zegler). So far, the books and movies haven’t explored the stories of winners from other districts.

The new prequel story will feature a shocking twist: it’s set during the Second Quarter Quell, a special and even more dangerous version of the Hunger Games. Unlike the usual Games with 24 contestants, this one will have double that number – four tributes from each of the twelve districts.

Woody Harrelson played the older version of the character in the previous four films, but Zada will now play a younger version who is new to the games. The rest of the cast for Sunrise on the Reaping includes Mckenna Grace, Ben Wang, Maya Hawke, Elle Fanning, Ralph Fiennes, and Kieran Culkin.

Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are confirmed to return as Katniss and Peeta, and will likely film scenes mirroring the book’s epilogue. If Sunrise on the Reaping is indeed the final movie, it would bring the story full circle, reuniting the main trio one last time.

Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will be released in theaters on November 20, 2026.
