Doctor Who’s Jodie Whittaker “protective” over divisive season finale

As a devoted fan of Doctor Who, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of disappointment when Jodie Whittaker‘s final scenes as the Thirteenth Doctor failed to explore the promised romance between her character and Yasmin Khan (Mandip Gill). The build-up to this moment had been teased throughout the series, with Yaz openly expressing her feelings for the Doctor in a previous special. However, Whittaker’s recent interview with the Radio Times has given me renewed hope and appreciation for their on-screen dynamic.

Jodie Whittaker, who plays the Doctor in “Doctor Who,” has expressed a sense of care and guardianship towards the controversial ending of her tenure as the iconic character.

As a dedicated fan, I was looking forward to seeing more development of the romantic connection between the Thirteenth Doctor, played by Jodie Whittaker, and her companion Yasmin Khan, portrayed by Mandip Gill, in the 2022 season. However, I was left feeling let down as the show didn’t delve deeper into their relationship.

Despite Yaz expressing her feelings for the Doctor in an earlier special, Whittaker has recently explained and defended the way their final scenes together were written.

She shared with the Radio Times, “I cared deeply about it. The beauty of it was truly remarkable, especially the moments inside the TARDIS during our final day of filming – those were a joy to be part of.”

After that, we fired our weapons at them, then climbed up to the TARDIS roof for some secluded shooting. Immediately following, the Time Lord underwent regeneration.

She explained that although the beats in the story don’t occur consecutively, from our perspective, due to how we filmed it, the transition between them seemed harmonious and reflected the evolving dynamic of their relationship.

Whittaker proposed that she and Gill’s reunion in the new audio adventure series might delve deeper into their romantic connection.

She also expressed her belief that anything is possible, exclaiming, “Who knows? We might end up sharing a romantic moment!” while laughing.

Gill herself added that the lack of development in the romantic aspect was not entirely disappointing for her, quipping, “I’m not sorry we didn’t share a kiss since Jodie doesn’t seem to use lip balm!”

“I consider that as the definitive one. That’s the one we worked on. That’s the way things transpired.”

I’m thrilled to share that during the weekend, it was officially announced that Big Finish is producing a new series called The Thirteenth Doctor Adventures. This exciting venture will consist of twelve captivating hour-long episodes set to be released in the year 2025.

In the UK, you can watch “Doctor Who” on BBC One, while viewers outside of the UK can find it on Disney+. For those in the UK, older episodes of “Doctor Who” are accessible on BBC iPlayer.
