Is Cineworld closing down? Full list of UK cinemas
As a longtime film enthusiast and London resident, I was saddened to hear about the upcoming closure of three Picturehouse cinemas – Fulham Road, Bromley, and Stratford East. Having grown up in this vibrant city, I’ve cherished the opportunity to visit these cinemas, each with its unique character and rich history.
Around a quarter of Cineworld’s cinemas in the UK and Ireland are said to be closing by early July, bringing unfortunate news to British cinema enthusiasts.
Another setback for the company, which operates Picturehouse cinemas, comes with the news of impending closures for Cineworld cinemas this summer.
I’ve got some news to share about the recent closure announcements, and I’d be happy to provide some additional information on the specific local cinemas that will be impacted by these changes.
Is Cineworld closing down?
I’ve heard from Sky News that around twenty-five Cineworld cinemas in the UK are supposedly going to shut down. However, Cineworld hasn’t made an official announcement about these closures just yet.
In June 2024, a report was released stating that Cineworld was closing certain locations as part of its restructuring process. Additionally, there were indications that the company intended to renegotiate lease terms for an additional 50 sites.
A representative from Cineworld replied to Digital Spy regarding the rumors: “We’re still considering our choices without making a comment on unverified reports and gossip.”
Cineworld is a multinational corporation that manages around 125 cinemas in total, with 100 of these located in the United Kingdom, and an additional 25 under the Picturehouse brand.
Back in September 2022, I found myself in a pickle as a gamer, rooting for Cineworld. But alas, the entertainment giant hit a rough patch. They had to file for bankruptcy protection in America. According to reports from Bloomberg UK, the company was drowning in debt and leases, racking up nearly $9 billion during their acquisition spree. Ouch! That’s quite a hefty price tag.
Two UK cinemas, Cineworld Runcorn and Cineworld Bristol, have shut down following the bankruptcy decision made abroad. Last November, they both stopped operations on the 26th.
As a dedicated gamer and regular moviegoer, I’ve sadly noticed that yet another familiar spot, Cineworld Friar Walk in Newport, has shut its doors forever. This once-thriving cinema chain became another casualty of the global pandemic, never to reopen after the UK’s coronavirus lockdown.

Although it’s uncertain which among the following 25 sites may face closure, here is a complete roster of the current Cineworld locations in the United Kingdom and Ireland:
As a devoted cinema fan, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting many Cineworld locations across the UK. Here are some of them, expressed in the first person:
Which Picturehouse cinemas are closing down?
In June 2024, Picturehouse announced that three of its London locations – Fulham Road, Bromley, and Stratford East – would be shutting down.
Fulham Road has ended its operations, officially closing on July 28. Stratford East follows suit, concluding business on the same date. The Bromley Picturehouse announces its closure, effective August 1.

“Both Picturehouse cinemas are dear to us, but escalating expenses for running them and decreasing moviegoers have forced this difficult decision,” stated Picturehouse regarding the recent shutdowns.
Hugh Grant was one Fulham local to publicly lament the closure of his nearest Picturehouse.
“On X, he posted: ‘Fulham Road cinema is shutting down after 94 years.’ He found this hard to accept, expressing, ‘It’s oddly unbearable. Instead, let’s stay home and stream our favorite content while we scroll through.’ A sad face emoji accompanied his tweet.”
Cineworld bought the cinema chain for £47.3 million back in December 2021.
