The Acolyte gave a cameo to one of Star Wars’ most interesting legends
As a longtime Star Wars fan and avid gamer, I was absolutely thrilled to finally see Darth Plagueis make his live action debut in the season 1 finale of The Acolyte. This moment has been a long time coming for those of us who grew up hearing tales of this enigmatic Sith Lord from the lore of the Force.
[Ed. note: This post contains spoilers for season 1 of Star Wars: The Acolyte.]
In the finale of “The Acolyte” season 1, Darth Plagueis made his live-action appearance for the first time. The show subtly introduced him as he watched from a hidden spot the Stranger (Manny Jacinto) and his future padawan, Osha (Amandla Stenberg). This was a significant moment for Star Wars fans who are well-versed in the lore of Darth Plagueis the Wise.
In “Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith,” Chancellor Palpatine, who later turned out to be a Sith Lord named Darth Sidious, introduced Plagueis to Anakin Skywalker through an intriguing tale. According to Palpatine’s account, Plagueis was a remarkable Jedi Master endowed with immense Force abilities. Over time, he grew so powerful that he could influence life itself and achieve immortality. Yet, this prolonged life came with a caveat – instead of preserving his own body indefinitely, he had to transfer his consciousness into a new being.
As someone who has spent countless hours delving into the intricacies of the Star Wars saga, I can’t help but be intrigued by the complex relationship between Sheev Palpatine (also known as the “Future Emperor”) and his enigmatic master, Darth Plagueis.
Another intriguing possibility is that Anakin’s creation was solely the doing of the Force itself. However, this origin remains a mystery as no definitive answer has been given. It could be that Darth Sidious, also known as Sheev, orchestrated Anakin’s upbringing with the intention of shaping him into an ideal apprentice. Alternatively, Plagueis may have played a role in Anakin’s creation, providing an explanation for his appearance in “The Acolyte.”
The story of “The Acolyte” centers around the two sisters Mae and Osha, who are connected as one soul and brought to life through the power of witches and a vergence. However, the surprising revelation at the last minute that Darth Plagueis was involved raises the suspicion that he manipulated events to create an ideal host for himself.
As someone who has delved deep into the intricacies of the Force and its ability to transfer consciousness, I can’t help but be intrigued by the possibility of merging one’s essence into a blank slate that is particularly receptive to this cosmic energy. What could be more alluring than starting anew with a strong foundation in the Force?
In other words, some of these questions may get resolved in “The Acolyte” season 2 if it’s produced, but until then, devoted Star Wars followers can either look forward to or be frustrated by the long-awaited appearance of Plagueis on screen.
