My Minecraft game is just digging a big cube and it’s perfect

I’ve always found solace in the simple pleasures of Minecraft, and my unconventional playstyle is a reflection of that. While my friends built grand cities and intricate structures above ground, I chose to delve deep beneath the surface and create something unique and personal to me: a massive underground structure, which I affectionately call my “Big Cube.”

My friends and I established a Minecraft server several years ago as a means of socializing and chatting with each other while we engaged in activities such as chopping down trees, mining holes, and discovering new territories. For me, this was my initial foray into the world of Minecraft, and it ignited an unexpected passion within me. As my companions developed intricate systems for raising large numbers of chickens, constructing cities inhabited by villagers, and engineering colossal bridges to connect different lands, I focused on a more basic enjoyment. For quite some time now, I have been engrossed in the process of excavating a monumental subterranean edifice, which can be simply referred to as a gigantic cube.

As a Minecraft enthusiast who often finds myself wandering off the beaten path, I can’t help but adopt an unusual playstyle. Unlike others who relish the thrill of discovering new islands or exploring towering mountains, I easily get disoriented. Numerous hours have been spent in this pixelated world, with my heart racing as I evade phantoms, skeletons, and spiders, always in search of a familiar landmark to guide me back on track.

When we initiated a fresh server among my companions, they dedicated their efforts toward constructing an elegant metropolis aloft. In contrast, I opted for solitude in the depths of the map. They ascended and sculpted their city in the skies, while I descended and expanded my subterranean domain. Occasionally, I’d emerge to explore the expanses above, primarily erecting towering stone structures to minimize my chances of getting disoriented. With a visible tower as my guide, I could always navigate my way back to my labyrinthine tunnels.

After my friends had all moved on to different games and lost interest in our Minecraft realm, I continued to play. I kept mining and exploring.

I’ve never been known for my creative building skills; in survival games, I typically construct a large, plain square house instead of intricate, handcrafted wonders or aligned mansions. Building tunnels beneath the ground seemed appealing to me on a deep level. Eventually, those tunnels evolved into an oversized cube.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share my experience of transforming an expansive area into a vibrant community. It’s hard to put into words, but there’s something incredibly satisfying about shaping this vast space. And the best part? I’ve managed to populate it with charming villagers who call this brick-built residential district their home. They’re always in high spirits, especially when I peer through a ceiling hole and scatter generous handfuls of potatoes and beetroots as treats.

In Survival mode instead of Creative, I find joy in the meticulous tasks of mining and smelting. Some may view it as monotonous, but I derive comfort from the consistent progress. Whenever I’ve felt overwhelmed with frustration, sadness, loneliness or despair over the past few years, I turn to this activity. And when the night falls, I bravely venture into the underworld, gathering buckets full of lava to illuminate my base with it.

In my Minecraft experience, my realm doesn’t extend far beyond a limited area on the map. I’ve barely scratched the surface of its vastness. Yet, I am intimately familiar with my small corner, bathed in the glow of stolen lava from unfortunate pigs. While some find tranquility in Zen gardens or knitting, my heart craves the depths of the mines.

My large-scale Minecraft project may not be the most effective or visually appealing approach for many players, but it’s provided me with a unique way to cope with a troubled mind and find tranquility through the engaging experience of constructing grand structures.
