Disney park fans only love Epcot for the drinking

As a seasoned gamer and theme park enthusiast, I’ve had the pleasure of exploring various Disney parks throughout my life. Among them all, Epcot in Orlando, Florida, has always left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. Don’t get me wrong, there are aspects I enjoy; Spaceship Earth and Living With the Land transport me back to my childhood. However, the main reason people rave about Epcot is not for its educational value or immersive attractions, but rather its unique drinking culture.

At Orlando’s Walt Disney World in Florida, you’ll find four distinct parks. There’s Magic Kingdom, famously known for its castle and quintessential Disney experience. Next is Hollywood Studios, home to Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge and various attractions outside the Disney brand. Animal Kingdom combines a wildlife preserve with thrilling theme park rides and experiences. Lastly, Epcot, Walt Disney’s innovative creation, offers educational and entertaining experiences.

TopMob’s Spicy Takes Week is our chance to spotlight fun arguments that bring a little extra heat to the table.

From a gamer’s perspective, I personally find it hard to defend Epcot as a must-visit theme park. Contrary to popular belief portrayed in heartfelt TikTok videos, my experience has been that Epcot rarely lives up to the hype. Instead, I believe its charm lies more in its lively drinking scene rather than any magical allure it might possess.

I’ve been to Epcot numerous times, but I must admit that the World Showcase has never truly captivated me. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the effort put into replicating different countries’ cultures and traditions. However, my experiences there have felt more like a casual stroll than an authentic journey.

Sure, OK, but it’s also a place on the Disney grounds where you can get a hefeweizen for $16.

In the sunny Florida state, where I attended college, I’ve noticed that many people make a tradition of visiting Epcot once they reach the age of 21. There’s an intriguing pastime adults engage in at this theme park: sampling new alcoholic beverages from each country as part of a fun game. The friends I have who are Disney enthusiasts absolutely rave about Epcot, regarding it as the most enjoyable aspect of their Disney experience.

Epcot loses its charm for me without the drinks. I enjoy reminiscing about the educational rides such as Spaceship Earth and Living with the Land, which seem stuck in time from the mid-2000s. However, my affection for these attractions is largely sentimental. The newer additions have long queues that make waiting seem unnecessary. As for World Showcase, the hype surrounding it pales in comparison to the experience itself, especially if you’re not sampling different beverages every quarter hour. Instead, you find yourself wandering aimlessly and appreciating miniature replicas of real-life destinations.

Some World Showcase festivals, such as the Food and Wine event in autumn, can be enjoyable due to their non-alcoholic offerings, like the memorable Belgian waffle with berry compote I once tasted. However, when there’s no extra attraction, it feels underwhelming to just explore replicas of real places that range from kitschy to tokenistic at best. Though you can buy souvenirs reflecting the cultural heritage of each country, like a beer stein in Germany or a Hunter x Hunter mug in Japan, it’s puzzling why there isn’t Mulan merchandise in China’s pavilion. Besides a few attractions and outdated videos, not much else is happening there. Still, every country does have its unique drink to discover!

After spending a significant amount of time immersed in the Disney theme park community, I’ve noticed a remarkable fervor for Epcot that sets it apart from other parks. People are deeply invested in preserving its original charm, often voicing strong opinions against any changes. This attachment is not based on hard data, but rather an emotional connection. Compared to other Disney parks, including the classic Magic Kingdom, Epcot evokes a unique protective sentiment. This may be due to its past as an educational theme park, which was once perceived as dull and unentertaining, even during my childhood. However, I now realize that this perception was misguided; it’s the availability of alcohol that adds to the allure of Epcot.

As a seasoned theme park enthusiast who has braved the sweltering Florida sun countless times, I strongly believe that indulging in cocktails during long days at the park is not the best decision. Don’t get me wrong; I adore a good cocktail as much as the next person. The thrill of discovering unique and themed drinks at bars is always an exciting experience for me. In fact, just last weekend, I savored a Super Monkey Punch at a gamer-themed bar – it was a real treat!

At Disney World, there are exciting spots beyond the theme parks to enjoy a drink. While alcohol is available in all four parks, note that Magic Kingdom only offers it at table service restaurants which tend to fill up quickly. However, instead of getting drunk during a sweltering theme park day, consider exploring the nearby resorts. Trader Sam’s, a unique cocktail bar located in the Polynesian Village Resort, offers special effects and air conditioning. Additionally, Disney Springs boasts numerous options for imbibing. Drinking in extreme heat, humidity, and sunlight is not advisable; long wait times demand hydration instead.

I’ve been there before, tried the wild party scene, but now I value my peace and comfort. I’d rather savor a drink or two in a cozy hotel bar than endure the chaos of a crowded nightclub. And when it comes to thrill rides like Space Mountain, the feeling of being high without the influence of alcohol is an experience I wouldn’t trade for anything. My life journey has taught me that self-love and personal comfort are essential, and I’m not willing to compromise on that anymore.
