In 2025, few animated projects became as popular as Netflix’s Kop Demon Hunters. This creative musical action film centers on the K-pop group HUNTR/X, who balance their music careers with a secret life: protecting the world from demons. While it was expected anime fans would enjoy the film, Kop Demon Hunters also surprisingly gained recognition during awards season.
The song “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters was a huge success, winning a Golden Globe, an Academy Award, and a Grammy. While a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is planned for 2030, fans are eager for something similar to enjoy in the meantime. Released shortly before the film became a global hit, the magical girl anime Princession Orchestra isn’t just a great follow-up watch – it’s a stunning musical anime that’s arguably even better than the award-winning KPop Demon Hunters.
Princession Orchestra Turns Pop Idols Into Demon-Hunting Princesses
Created by Akifumi Kaneko and Noriyasu Agematsu, Princession Orchestra is a brand-new anime series that draws inspiration from the fantastical world of Alice in Wonderland. The story unfolds in Alicepia, a vibrant and magical land that’s secretly hidden away, accessible only to a select group of young girls and musically gifted creatures.
The peaceful life in Alicepia is disrupted when monsters called Jammerwocks – inspired by the creature from Alice in Wonderland – start causing trouble. To protect their magical world from these monsters, three middle school students – Minamo, Kagari, and Nagase – suddenly discover special powers while in Alicepia.
In Princession Orchestra, three ordinary girls magically become Princesses with special singing and dancing powers, allowing them to fight monsters called Jammerwocks. Fans of KPop Demon Hunters will quickly recognize the similarities between these princesses – Minamo, Kagari, and Nagase – and the characters Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. Similar to HUNTR/X, the girls’ everyday problems fuel their supernatural battles in the world of Alicepia, helping them develop both as performers and as individuals.
It would have been simple for Princess Orchestra to conclude its story quickly. However, the anime instead offers a substantial four-season run, with twelve episodes per season. Each season of Princess Orchestra explores complex themes, going far beyond simple ideas. While it might initially seem like a typical pop idol anime, it actually has a surprising depth that’s similar to what makes KPop Demon Hunters so appealing.
Princession Orchestra Perfected KPop Demon Hunters’ Formula First
While some might see Princession Orchestra as a simpler version of the popular animated film it’s based on, the hit Netflix series actually has a lot to gain from studying it. Now is a great time for KPop Demon Hunters to explore other anime featuring supernatural pop idols, beginning with Princession Orchestra, as they plan the direction of their next season.
The team behind the magical girl series Symphogear, where music is used to fight aliens called Noise, also created Princession Orchestra. Princession Orchestra improves on Symphogear, learning from past experiences to create a more refined and unique experience. Other series like AKB0048, Visual Prison, and Zombieland Saga could also offer inspiration for future stories about KPop Demon Hunters.
The series KPop Demon Hunters has a detailed and imaginative world, leaving plenty of space to expand the story with classic supernatural creatures like vampires, zombies, werewolves, and witches, much like other anime in the genre. The rival boy band, Saja Boys, could be a good starting point for introducing these new elements. Princession Orchestra explores a similar idea.

The Princession Orchestra is launching a boy band called Band Snatch, who work for the Red Queen. This group has the power to summon Jammerwocks to attack Alicepia, seeking a resource called Musessence. Musessence is similar to the soul energy used by KPop Demon Hunters and is linked to the Golden Honmoon. While the Saja Boys try to weaken defenses by inspiring fear and shame, HUNTR/X harness Honmoon energy to create weapons and safeguard the world.
While Princession Orchestra has more freedom to develop its concepts, KPop Demon Hunters could benefit from exploring its existing ideas about supernatural themes, musical abilities, and topics like identity, shame, and the importance of chosen families. Seeing the success of the characters in Princession Orchestra makes you wish the characters in KPop Demon Hunters could achieve similar triumphs.
Princession Orchestra’s Success Is Key to Making Musical Magical Girls a Permanent Industry Fixture
I’m so excited about this trend – we’re clearly on the verge of seeing a lot more stories mixing pop idols with the supernatural! And Netflix is really leaning into it with KPop Demon Hunters. It’s not just a sequel, they’re planning a whole universe! We’re talking two sequels, a full TV show, a short film, even a stage musical and a graphic novel! It’s amazing to see this story expanding in so many different directions.
Fans are speculating that the next KPop Demon Hunters installment will delve deeper into the story’s universe and reveal more about the characters Mira and Zoey. Beyond that, the future of the series is open to many possibilities. The rich and imaginative world-building seen in Princession Orchestra could also be a great fit for the KPop Demon Hunters franchise.
A follow-up film could really expand on the unique abilities, transformations, and creatures featured in the story. The tiger and magpie from KPop Demon Hunters were particularly memorable characters, drawing on rich Sino-Korean mythology. Future installments could introduce more of the Four Holy Beasts and explore similar fate-altering transformations as seen in Princess Orchestra.
The collaboration with Princession Orchestra’s powerful finale suggests a bright future where pop stars and supernatural events coexist. While this idea might have been unexpected for North American viewers in 2025, there’s plenty of potential to establish the ‘musical magical girl’ concept as a lasting genre, rather than a fleeting trend.
