6 new horror movies and shows releasing this week, including Sweet Home season 3
As a long-time gamer and avid fan of both films and television shows, I am always excited for new releases, especially those that promise to deliver thrills, suspense, and the unexpected. July has been a month full of anticipation, with several highly-anticipated titles set to debut this week.
The month of July is passing by quickly, so take a moment to savor some of the exciting new releases this week. Don’t miss out on the suspenseful disaster film “Twisters” and the final chapter of Netflix’s gripping apocalyptic series “Sweet Home“.
In addition to the latest film releases and premieres this week, don’t forget to catch up on new episodes of “Evil” and “Presumed Innocent”.
Twisters (Theaters, Jul. 19)
In the aftermath of the hugely successful 1996 film “Twister,” this sequel is generating rave reviews from both critics and viewers. Dubbed an entertaining crowd-pleaser, “Twisters” takes us on a thrilling journey with a new team of storm chasers, who are excited to use advanced technology to track tornadoes. However, their mission becomes perilous when they encounter multiple storm systems colliding in central Oklahoma. Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, and Sasha Lane lead the star-studded cast.
Oddity (Theaters, Jul. 19)
As a seasoned film critic with a deep appreciation for the intricacies of psychological thrillers, I am excited to share my perspective on the upcoming release of “Oddity,” produced by IFC Films. This chilling tale is set to premiere in select theaters this weekend before making its way to Shudder later this year.
Abigail (Peacock, Jul. 19)
Beginning this Friday, Abigail will be available for streaming. For those who weren’t able to catch the critically-acclaimed horror comedy in theaters, they now have the opportunity to watch it at home on Peacock. However, little do a band of criminals know that the powerful man they intend to kidnap has two young daughters – and one of them is not an easy target.
Sweet Home season 3 (Netflix, Jul. 19)
As a dedicated fan of Korean entertainment, I can hardly contain my excitement for the return of the gripping apocalyptic horror series this Friday. Having followed the story through its first two seasons, I’ve grown deeply invested in the characters and their struggle for survival against the ominous backdrop of an impending doom. The fact that all episodes of the final season will be released simultaneously is a true blessing, allowing me to immerse myself uninterrupted in this thrilling conclusion. This experience resonates with me on a personal level as I recall the agonizing wait between episodes during past seasons and the joy of binge-watching entire series when available. The anticipation builds within me as I prepare for this final journey into the dark and suspenseful world of this captivating Korean production.
As a gamer, I’m excited to share that many familiar faces from past seasons will be making a comeback! One of the most jaw-dropping twists from season 2 is getting a continuation – remember how we learned that Lee Eun-hyuk was alive? Well, Lee Do-hyun, who played pivotal roles in “The Glory” and “Exhuma,” is set to rejoin the cast to reprise his part based on what we’ve seen in the trailer.
The Hyperborean (VOD, Jul. 19)
In an upcoming horror sci-fi movie titled “The Hyperborean,” we find aliens, ice mummies, and multiple deceased bodies. This film embraces its quirks and promises to be an entertaining experience. The story revolves around a crisis manager who tries to help a troubled family deal with their faltering whiskey business. Suddenly, they’re thrown into an unusual predicament filled with the supernatural.
Lady in the Lake (Apple TV+, Jul. 19)
In this intriguing mystery thriller series adapted from Laura Lippman’s novel, Natalie Portman and Moses Ingram take on starring roles. Portman portrays a housewife from the 1960s who decides to leave her domestic life behind and pursue a career as a journalist. As she delves deeper into the investigative world, she becomes fixated on solving the murders of a young girl and a bartender named Cleo Sherwood (Ingram). The initial two episodes will be released this coming Friday, with subsequent installments following suit on a weekly basis.
