The Simpsons episode pulled from Channel 4 after Donald Trump gun attack

As a long-time fan of The Simpsons, I was taken aback when Channel 4 unexpectedly replaced an episode from season 7 during its re-runs. The episode in question, titled “Lisa the Iconoclast,” deals with Lisa’s discovery that Springfield’s founder, Jebediah Springfield, attempted to assassinate George Washington.

After the shooting incident at a Donald Trump rally in Pennsylvania, Channel 4 has decided not to air an episode of The Simpsons.

On July 13, Saturday, a 20-year-old man named Thomas Matthew Crooks, identified as a Republican, unexpectedly began shooting at the ex-president. The Secret Service agents swiftly intervened and tackled him to the ground. Trump, who was running for the Republican presidential nomination at the time, sustained an injured ear but reportedly remained unharmed overall.

I’m closely following the latest developments in this tragic event where one person lost their life and two others were left fighting for theirs. The shooter was likewise pronounced dead at the crime scene after reportedly opening fire.

After the shooting incident, Channel 4 decided to air a different episode instead of the one in season 7 of “The Simpsons” where George Washington is targeted for murder. They chose an episode from season 30 instead.

In the seventh season, an untitled episode that didn’t air on Sundays introduces us to Lisa’s discovery: The founding father of Springfield was, in fact, a pirate named for murder attempts on George Washington.

As an avid viewer, I’ve been keeping an eye on Channel 4’s programming changes. While the network remains silent on the recent last-minute scheduling shift, some fellow fans and I have shared our theories on social media platforms like Twitter, expressing our curiosity and speculation regarding the reasons behind this unexpected upheaval.

A person pointed out that in addition to the gunman on the roof, the episode contains another significant plot point: Jebediah Springfield’s attempt to assassinate George Washington. It’s possible that this scene was eliminated without much recall due to the focus on the former.

It’s impressive who made the call for this episode to air, but it’s hard to believe that out of all episodes, this one was chosen. The uncanny predictive power of The Simpsons continues to amaze us.

In an interview with Digital Spy in 2022, The Simpsons’ executive producer Al Jean shared that the long-running series has surprisingly accurately predicted certain events over its 30-year run.

Based on my own experiences and observations, I believe there’s a double-edged nature to the constant emergence of new problems and challenges in the world. On one hand, it can be disheartening to witness the struggles and suffering that come with these issues. From a global perspective, it’s a never-ending cycle of crises that demand our attention and action.

“One notable aspect of the lengthy show is that we discussed climate change in the initial few episodes. Now, its significance is increasingly clear to all.”

“I don’t think anybody listened to us, but at least we were talking about it!”

In the United States, new episodes of The Simpsons (season 35) are being broadcast on FOX every Sunday night. Previous seasons, from 1 to 34, can be streamed in the UK on Disney+.
