Is Aegon’s dragon Sunfyre dead in House of the Dragon?
As a dedicated fan of George R.R. Martin’s world and a long-time viewer of Game of Thrones, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness at the potential demise of Sunfyre, Aegon Targaryen’s magnificent golden dragon. The gruesome details of his injuries in House of the Dragon have left me on the edge of my seat, wondering if this beloved character will make it through the season.
In the series “House of the Dragon,” King Aegon II Targaryen’s condition is grim. After the intense Battle at Rook’s Rest, Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) was transported to King’s Landing in a crate to recuperate from the severe injuries inflicted by his brother Aemond (Ewan Mitchell). The damages were extensive: over half of his body was engulfed in burns, his leg was shattered, and his skin was marred due to his Valyrian steel armor fusing with his flesh.
I was deeply moved by Aegon’s resilience in Episode 205, “Regent,” despite his terrible condition. With the support of Grand Maester Orwyle (played by Kurt Egyiawan), he fought to recover. But what became of Sunfyre, his magnificent golden dragon?
In the early part of the episode, I found myself in a conversation with Ser Criston Cole, played by Fabien Frankel. He shared with Alicent Hightower, portrayed by Olivia Cooke, that he had left a small group of soldiers behind at Rook’s Rest to guard the seized castle and the ailing dragon, Sunfyre, which he described as “struggling to hang on to life.” Towards the end of the episode, I heard Rhaenyra Targaryen, played by Emma D’Arcy, discuss with her son Jace, Harry Collet, about how Meleys had clashed with two dragons and only one of them had perished.
The outlook for Sunfyre seems uncertain based on the information from “Fire & Blood” by George R.R. Martin. However, it’s essential to clarify that the dragon’s demise hasn’t been definitively confirmed yet. Let’s delve into the details from the source material, keeping in mind there will be spoilers ahead.
Does Sunfyre die in the book?
In “House of the Dragon,” it’s uncertain if Sunfyre has met his end, but given that he continues to live in “Fire & Blood” and plays a part in the upcoming Targaryen conflict, it’s likely that we haven’t seen the last of him on the show. In the novel, Sunfyre, like Aegon, is injured during the Battle of Rook’s Rest and cannot be transported back to King’s Landing with Criston Cole’s army. Instead, Sunfyre stays in the forest near Rook’s Rest, healing on the ground until he recovers enough to fly once more.
As a seasoned fan of the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series, I’ve seen my fair share of twists and turns in the world of Westeros. Based on what I’ve read so far about “House of the Dragon,” it seems that Aegon has returned to King’s Landing, injured and in need of recovery. In his absence, Aemond has been named regent. Criston, the Blackfyre wielder, left Sunfyre at Rook’s Rest, and while the dragon is “long in the dying,” I can’t help but feel a pang of worry.
Regarding what Rhaenyra told Jace, she can’t be absolutely sure about Sunfyre’s condition since her troops are too far from Rook’s Rest to have definite information. All she can do is assume that Sunfyre has perished.
In my opinion, “House of the Dragon” is skillfully maintaining an air of uncertainty to maximize the impact when Sunfyre makes his appearance again. With just three episodes left in season 2, we won’t be waiting long to discover the answer.
