Genshin Impact Natlan’s trailer has fans divided

As a dedicated fan of Genshin Impact, I’m both thrilled and dismayed by the latest developments surrounding the upcoming Natlan adventure. The prospect of meeting new characters and exploring a region inspired by Latin American cultures is an exciting one, but the controversy surrounding Mavuika, the possible Pyro Archon, has cast a shadow over this otherwise promising addition to the game.

The upcoming expedition in Natlan of Genshin Impact is approaching quickly, yet the joyful vibes from its vibrantly colored scenery may not fully represent the situation.

On Friday, developer HoYoverse unveiled a teaser trailer featuring eleven new characters slated to join the game through the Natlan narrative. Among them is a significant character with potential Pyro Archon abilities: Mavuika.

The introduction of a fresh character is often met with enthusiasm among fans. However, the preview and portrayal of Mavuika in the game trailers have drawn criticism from some players for not accurately depicting Latin American cultures they claim to be inspired by.

I’m thrilled to share that among the impressive lineup of games created by Hoyoverse is “Genshin Impact,” which made its debut in 2020. In this captivating title, I step into the shoes of The Traveler – a twin on a quest to reunite with their long-lost sibling amidst an epic journey through a vast open world.

During the summer of 2023, the developers introduced Fontaine, an enchanting water-themed region drawing inspiration from France and the United Kingdom. Previously, in 2022, the development team presented Sumeru, a region richly influenced by Middle Eastern and South Asian cultures and areas. However, this expansion faced criticism for allegedly perpetuating stereotypes in its world design.

In the upcoming adventure, gamers will travel to the realm of Natlan. Hoyoverse has kept quiet about the specific launch date, but based on the current patch plan, it seems reasonable to anticipate the update arriving this summer.

There is still much we don’t fully understand about this area. Hoyoverse has unveiled two preview videos, one of which came out on Friday. Based on earlier hints, however, it seems that the region may draw inspiration from Latin America to some extent.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve noticed an intriguing observation made by the community regarding the name “Natlan” in “Genshin Impact.” Some believe it bears resemblance to Aztlán, the legendary homeland of the Aztecs. In this game world, Natlan is known as the realm of War and serves as the residence for the Pyro Archon, the deity overseeing the fire element.

As a passionate fan of this captivating world, I’ve come to understand that each region is ruled by a celestial being, known as an “Archon.” These gods are often associated with a particular element. With Mavuika taking center stage in the trailer due to her impressive design and fiery appearance, it seems she has been cast as the Pyro Archon in Natlan. However, there’s a slight inconsistency: She’s depicted as having a white complexion.

TikTok users are currently voicing their concerns over the representation of characters in the game, with some portrayed as white or having light skin. A popular comment under one video, which received over 3,500 likes, read “sighs heavily at the pyro archon,” possibly conveying frustration or disappointment. In response, another user wrote “she’s literally so attractive but she’s pale,” accompanied by a crying emoji. Another criticized the Hoyoverse development team, stating “this is heartbreaking, even after all the complaints they still don’t seem to be listening.” Some users have responded by sharing videos in which they alter the skin tones of the characters.

Some supporters have adopted a lighter approach and quipped about the latest character’s resemblance to Sunset Shimmer from “My Little Pony.” The leading comment on the official TikTok video for “Genshin Impact” reads, “Welcome back, almost identical to Sunset Shimmer!”

To date, HoYoverse has not revealed that Mavuika is indeed the Pyro Archon. Should she turn out to be anyone other than the initial ruler of the domain, it’s possible that skeptical viewers could react differently in the future.

In “Genshin Impact,” character revelations are what keep the community buzzing with enthusiasm. The level of anticipation for an update is determined by how well-liked or highly anticipated a particular character is among fans. For now, we can only look forward to discovering more about her role in the story as it unfolds.
