Netflix Officially Adapting New Superhero Show Based On Popular Comic Books 10 Years After First Series Was Cancelled

Netflix is creating an animated show for adults based on the comic book series Powers, created by Brian Michael Bendis and originally published by Dark Horse Comics.

Powers is a TV show that blends superhero action with the gritty realism of crime dramas and police investigations. It centers on detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, who investigate crimes committed by people with extraordinary abilities – often called ‘powers’.

Netflix is currently developing a series called Powers. Keith Goldberg and Chris Tongue from Dark Horse Entertainment are executive producers. Brian Michael Bendis, who created the comic, and his co-creator, Michael Avon Oeming, are both working on the show creatively. Bendis is writing the first episode, and Oeming is helping to design the show’s look.

The superhero series Powers has moved publishers several times. It originally ran with Image Comics from 2000 to 2004, then moved to Marvel’s Icon imprint. In 2018, it went to DC Comics as part of their Jinxworld line, and again to Dark Horse Comics in 2021. Characters from Powers also appeared in the Image Comics series Crossover, created by Donny Cates, Dee Cunniffe, John J. Hill, and Geoff Shaw, which ran from November 4, 2020, to August 18, 2022, and is currently paused.

Before becoming an Amazon series, Powers was first adapted into a live-action show for PlayStation Network. It aired for two seasons, from March 10, 2015, to July 19, 2016, as part of PlayStation’s effort to produce original content. Sharlto Copley and Susan Heyward starred as Christian and Deena, respectively.

Netflix isn’t just developing a show based on ‘Powers’; they’re also creating a series with Brian Bendis inspired by his 1998 graphic novel, ‘Torso’. Zach Cregger, the director and writer of the acclaimed horror movie ‘Weapons’, will also produce this new adaptation.

Brian Michael Bendis is a successful comic book writer known for both independent and mainstream work. He’s particularly famous for his critically acclaimed run on Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man, which ran from September 2000 to June 2011 and featured artwork by Mark Bagley, Stuart Immonen, and David Lafuente.

The comic book series was a massive success, selling more than 20 million copies globally and earning praise from critics who especially loved the artwork and the writer’s storytelling. Brian Michael Bendis and Stuart Immonen worked on Ultimate Spider-Man for a remarkably long time, becoming the writer-artist team with the longest continuous run on any Marvel comic, breaking the previous record held by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s work on Fantastic Four.

As of today, Netflix hasn’t announced when we can expect their Powers adaptation. I’m really excited about it, and I’m constantly checking for a release date, but so far, nothing official has been shared.
