I was shocked to hear about Chuck Norris‘s passing. I always imagined he’d live to a very old age, like 106! I remember watching one of his movies, Invasion USA, as the 26th movie I ever saw – I was a kid and kept track! I’d sneak the VHS from my brother whenever he wasn’t around and watch it over and over. It’s definitely my favorite, so it’s at the top of my list. I think it’s a really good movie, and you probably will too if you give it a watch.
Chuck Norris wasn’t a critical darling, but he was a huge fan favorite. Even though he’s only made a handful of movies in the past quarter-century, he’s stayed popular thanks to funny internet memes that play on his image as an incredibly tough guy. Things like, “When Chuck Norris went to college, he told his dad he was now the man of the house!” or “Chuck Norris has been to Mars – that’s why there’s no life there!” are widely known. Let’s take a look back at some of his most memorable films and celebrate his career.

‘Forest Warrior’ (1996)

Second Class Cinema
You might be surprised to learn that Chuck Norris actually has been in a fantasy movie! It doesn’t seem like his usual style, but he plays a ghost in Forest Warrior. His character, Jebediah McKenna, can even transform into animals like bears, wolves, and eagles – all thanks to being in the afterlife. The story goes that Jebediah was killed because he wouldn’t sell his land to a logging company, and now his spirit has returned to defend the Tanglewood forest from those same loggers.
It’s hard to say if this movie idea originated with Chuck Norris or his brother, Aaron, but whoever came up with it deserves a good scolding – the plot is completely over the top! Despite being so ridiculous, Forest Warrior feels important, particularly now with growing concerns about climate change, because it strongly promotes protecting the environment. It’s so absurd that Chuck Norris doesn’t defeat the villain with his usual moves; he actually becomes a bear! Honestly, you just need to see it to believe it – I can’t do it justice trying to explain it.

‘Top Dog’ (1995)

Tanglewood Entertainment Group
I’ve loved dogs ever since I was a kid, and I used to really enjoy watching the show Inspector Rex. So, it’s no surprise I was really impressed with Top Dog. This action movie tells the story of Jake Wilder, a brave law enforcement officer, and his police dog, Reno. They team up to solve a case after Reno’s former handler is killed, and uncover a dangerous plot by a group of Neo-Nazis who plan to attack a tolerance conference.
By the time Top Dog was released, Chuck Norris’s popularity as a movie star was starting to decline. It was his last theatrical film of the 1990s, after which he moved towards making movies for home video. However, it’s still a really fun action movie! The film tackles interesting themes like ethics and animal rights, making it surprisingly relevant even now. One scene in particular – where Wilder fights almost a hundred criminals in a single room – is unforgettable, and will stick with you long after the credits roll. It’s moments like that which cemented Chuck Norris’s status as an action icon!

‘Missing in Action’ (1984)

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
Few films about prisoners of war are as good as Missing in Action. The idea of leaving no soldier behind is a strong theme in military stories, often seen in movies like the recent War Machine, and it’s central to this film. Missing in Action follows Colonel Braddock (Chuck Norris), who escaped a Vietnamese POW camp a decade earlier, as he returns to Vietnam to search for American soldiers still unaccounted for.
What really makes Missing in Action stand out is its exciting action, but it’s also notable for tackling a difficult subject: American soldiers still missing after the Vietnam War. For years, many US servicemen were listed as MIA, and it wasn’t until the mid-1980s, with better relations between the US and Vietnam, that efforts to locate them began. While the movie doesn’t offer a deep dive into the political side of things, it’s thoroughly entertaining!

‘Silent Rage’ (1982)

Columbia Pictures
You’d probably be surprised to learn that Chuck Norris actually starred in a sci-fi horror film. It’s true! The martial arts star, originally from Oklahoma and the creator of Chun Kuk Do, played a sheriff battling a genetically engineered serial killer in a movie called Silent Rage. It was the era of slasher films, and Norris saw an opportunity to participate in the trend.
What really sets the film Silent Rage apart in Chuck Norris’ career isn’t its science fiction aspects—it’s the surprisingly controversial sex scene. Back then, fans were shocked to see Norris in such a scene, and the backlash was significant. He reportedly avoided any similar scenes for the rest of his career. Looking back now, it’s hard to see what all the fuss was about—the scene seems quite mild compared to what’s acceptable in movies today.
6
‘Lone Wolf McQuade’ (1983)

The Orion Pictures
Chuck Norris has said the movie Lone Wolf McQuade greatly influenced his popular ’90s TV show, Walker, Texas Ranger, and it’s easy to see why. This action movie features Norris as J.J. McQuade, a tough Texas Ranger who actually has a wolf as a pet. Things take a turn when an arms dealer named Rawley Wilkes kidnaps McQuade’s daughter.
This 1980s movie is famous for having one of Chuck Norris’s most impressive fight scenes. In the final showdown, both the hero and villain ditch their weapons and fight using only their natural skills. The director, Steve Carver, had previously worked with Norris on the film An Eye for an Eye, which helped create a strong working relationship. Norris himself has always been grateful for this movie, believing it was key to establishing his career as a leading action star.
5
‘Delta Force’ (1986)

The Cannon Group
During his most famous years, Chuck Norris usually preferred to be the sole hero in his movies. However, in The Delta Force, he willingly shared the screen with Lee Marvin. Together, they played members of an elite military unit working to rescue passengers from Lebanese terrorists who had hijacked a Boeing 707. The film was originally planned to star Chuck Norris alongside Charles Bronson, but Bronson had to withdraw from the project.
Fans of historical accuracy particularly appreciate The Delta Force because its story is based on two actual events: the raid on Entebbe and the hijacking of Flight 847. What’s surprising is that it’s not just a non-stop action film – the movie actually holds back on action for the first 70 minutes. That’s unusual for a Chuck Norris movie, and it ultimately makes the film more compelling.
4
‘The Expendables 2’ (2012)

Lionsgate
Sylvester Stallone shared that he adjusted the script of The Expendables 2 to avoid strong language, specifically to accommodate Chuck Norris. Norris, a man known for his principles, wouldn’t have appeared in a film with swearing. This resulted in a PG-13 rating and allowed the movie – about a team of mercenaries seeking revenge for a fallen comrade – to move forward.
While The Expendables 2 features memorable scenes like Jean-Claude Van Damme’s knife kick, it’s best known for a hilarious exchange between Chuck Norris and Sylvester Stallone. Stallone’s character tells Norris he heard about a cobra bite, to which Norris coolly replies that the cobra died after five days of pain. The writing in that moment is so good, it deserves two honorary Oscars!
3
‘Return of the Dragon’ (1972)

Amazon
Bruce Lee’s film, Return of the Dragon, was the only movie he fully directed and the last one released while he was alive. He plays Tang Lung, a martial arts expert who travels to Italy to help his family and their restaurant after they’re targeted by a dangerous criminal group. The criminals hire another skilled fighter, Colt (played by Chuck Norris), to stop Lung, leading to a final, unforgettable battle at the Colosseum in Rome.
As a lifelong cinema fan, I always find it fascinating when actors take on roles against type. This movie is special because it’s one of the few times Chuck Norris played the bad guy – early in his career, he was really open to anything! And considering it was his very first film, he absolutely blew everyone away. The fight scene with Bruce Lee is legendary, and it’s still talked about today as one of the best ever. They both really showcased this incredible kick – the oblique kick – which has become super popular in modern fighting, even used by guys like UFC champion Jon Jones. It’s amazing to think about the lasting impact of that one scene – a true legacy!
2
‘Code of Silence’ (1985)

Orion Pictures
Originally intended as another Dirty Harry movie, Code of Silence was rejected during development. Orion Pictures then bought the script, and it became one of Chuck Norris’s most praised films. This action thriller features Norris as a principled police officer who must fight drug traffickers and dishonesty within his own police force.
Fans often say Chuck Norris’s best acting work is in Code of Silence. He goes beyond his usual action moves, showing genuine emotion – there’s even a scene where he almost cries! The film benefits from a strong script and direction. Director Andrew Davis credits Code of Silence with launching his Hollywood career, leading to successful films like Under Siege and The Fugitive.

‘Invasion USA’ (1985)

Cannon Releasing Corporation
Let’s be honest, Die Hard isn’t the only Christmas action classic! Chuck Norris starred in Invasion USA, and even years after its release, I was completely captivated. I remember dressing up like his character, Matt Hunter – a tough ex-CIA agent – with toy guns and blue overalls! The movie features Norris battling Soviet terrorists who decide to attack the United States during Christmas.
Okay, let me tell you about Invasion USA. While Die Hard just mentions Christmas, this movie really shows it. We’re dropped right into a classic Christmas Eve scene – families decorating trees, teenagers sharing a kiss… total suburban bliss. Then, boom! Bad guys show up, and one of them is packing a bazooka! Seriously, a bazooka! But don’t worry, Chuck Norris is there to handle things, and he does so with a pair of Uzis. And it’s in this film that we get arguably his most iconic line: “I am gonna hit you with so many rights you are going to beg for a left.” It’s… a lot.
Rest in peace, Chuck Norris! Hit the devil if you see him.
