The popular Amazon Prime Video thriller series, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, is returning, but with a new approach. The show, which previously followed Jack Ryan’s early career as a CIA operative, is scheduled for release in 2026.
The Jack Ryan series started as a popular set of films featuring Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, and Chris Pine as the iconic Tom Clancy hero. More recently, in 2018, Prime Video took over the franchise, casting John Krasinski in the lead role. Now, in 2026, Jack Ryan is returning to the big screen as a movie again.
Jack Ryan: Ghost War Releases On May 20
The new film, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War, continues the story from the Prime Video series Jack Ryan and will be available to stream on May 20th. Unlike previous seasons which told one story over many episodes, this installment is a standalone movie with a plot that feels reminiscent of classic spy shows.
Similar to the show 24, the new Jack Ryan series unfolds in real time, putting Jack in a race against the clock to prevent a major crisis. The story brings back familiar faces – Mike November (Michael Kelly) and James Greer (Wendell Pierce) – as Jack confronts an opponent who seems to always be one step ahead.
Sienna Miller joins the cast as Emma Marlowe, a new MI6 officer, and the team must confront a dangerous threat from their past – a betrayal they believed was resolved long ago.
Instead of being released in theaters, the new movie Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War will premiere on a streaming service. This release could be a way to gauge audience interest – if it performs well, it might lead to more Jack Ryan movies in the future, similar to the success of the series.
Why Prime Video Is Releasing A Jack Ryan Movie Rather Than Season 5
Some viewers of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan might be surprised to learn that a new movie, not another season of the popular Prime Video series, is being released. The last season left Jack Ryan stepping back from field work after a Congressional hearing, but the trailer reveals he’s unexpectedly pulled back into action.
Andrew Bernstein, known for his work on Ozark, directed the film, which was written by Aaron Rabin (from Nobody 2) and John Krasinski. The reason the project shifted from a TV series to a movie isn’t clear, but it’s probably because Krasinski is busy with his film career. Filming a TV show is a big time commitment, and he’s also planning another Quiet Place movie.
It’s not surprising to hear this, considering John Krasinski previously mentioned wanting to wrap up the show after four seasons. He did hint he’d be open to a smaller appearance later on, and always envisioned a movie as a potential continuation of the story. Essentially, ending the series was the original goal, but a film was always on the table.
Plus, Krasinski has expressed interest in continuing the story with a spin-off series centered around Michael Peña’s character, Domingo “Ding” Chavez. He might even make a cameo appearance! This would essentially be a Rainbow Six series, which fans of Tom Clancy should find very appealing.

Prior to the film Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War, the Jack Ryan story was told as a series on Prime Video, running from 2018 to 2023 and consisting of 30 episodes. This movie is the first to be developed from that series, which largely focused on Jack Ryan’s beginnings.
The Jack Ryan films were highly anticipated, given the enduring popularity of Tom Clancy’s spy novels. The movie series proved to be a commercial success, earning nearly $924 million worldwide. While the initial three films were critically acclaimed, the later installments received more mixed reviews, scoring around 50% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Prime Video series breathed new life into the franchise, and John Krasinski was a perfect fit for the lead role. The first season received a 75% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and while the second season’s score dipped to 67%, the third and fourth seasons were highly praised, earning scores of 81% and 87% respectively.
The popular series Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan received Emmy nominations in both 2019 and 2020. Now, fans can experience even more thrilling action with Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War, a new movie releasing this May.
