Home Improvement star Zachery Ty Bryan is sentenced to nearly two years for probation violation

Zachery Ty Bryan, known for his role on Home Improvement, could face additional jail time after being sentenced for breaking the terms of his probation on Friday.

A 44-year-old former actor was sentenced to 19 months in jail in Oregon on Friday. He had previously admitted to breaking the terms of his parole, as reported by KEZI News.

Because Bryan is currently in jail in California serving a 16-month sentence for a 2024 DUI, he had to attend the sentencing hearing remotely.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Bryan’s attorney to request comment.

Bryan was on probation following a domestic violence conviction in 2023. As part of his probation, he was required to stay sober, get permission before leaving the area, avoid committing any new crimes, and have no contact with the person he harmed.

Bryan was arrested five times in three states after his initial release, each arrest a violation of his parole, as reported by KEZI.

The former actor is now on trial in Oregon for another parole violation, even while currently serving time for a previous DUI conviction that already broke his parole.

Bryan is now dealing with additional legal issues, including a DUI charge in Oklahoma. Officials there plan to bring him to Oklahoma to face those charges after he finishes his sentence in California.

Bryan’s current legal trouble began with an arrest in Eugene, Oregon, last November. Police responded to a report of reckless endangerment and found Bryan in a truck with his fiancée, Johnnie Faye Cartwright, and their three young children. Contact with Cartwright was a violation of his probation.

Bryan’s lawyer, John Kolego, told TMZ that the judge gave an unfairly severe sentence.

He thought the sentence was far too harsh – actually, he called it ridiculous. He also mentioned that Zachery had been through a great deal of trauma.

Mr. Kolego acknowledged his client struggled with alcohol and believed the judge should have prioritized getting Bryan into a rehabilitation program.

Honestly, locking him up won’t solve anything, it’s just a waste of everyone’s time and money! I’m so frustrated with the judge, I really thought they’d see reason. It’s just…disappointing, to say the least. I mean, it won’t fix things, it’ll just make everything worse! I’m seriously upset about this whole thing.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve learned that even facing difficult circumstances doesn’t mean disengaging. My colleague, Kolego, pointed out that Bryan prioritized being present at the hearing – he attended remotely, even though he’s currently incarcerated. It really highlights his commitment, and shows you can still participate in important matters no matter what challenges life throws your way.

He expressed his apologies to the court, stating his desire to be a good father and admitting he struggles with alcohol. The judge then issued the sentence.

Bryan was sentenced to 16 months in custody in February in connection with his 2024 DUI arrest.

After reaching a plea agreement with prosecutors, he was sentenced at a follow-up court hearing, according to TMZ, which obtained the court documents.

Bryan, known for his role as Brad Taylor on the ABC sitcom that aired from 1991 to 1999, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence. His blood alcohol content was 0.15%, nearly double the legal limit of 0.08%.

The punishment was increased because the crime was serious, the news source reported. To make matters worse, the former sitcom star already had two previous convictions for driving under the influence, which complicated the current case.

The judge decided against probation for Bryan and instead sentenced him to 16 months in jail, according to reports. He received credit for 57 days already served.

Bryan recently explained his arrest related to domestic violence by saying it was hard to adjust from being a child star to having the responsibilities of an adult.

Police arrested Bryan in Riverside County, California, on February 17, 2024, for allegedly driving under the influence. This wasn’t his first offense, as he had at least three previous DUI convictions.

Authorities said that a misdemeanor contempt of court charge was also linked to the arrest.

According to a statement from Riverside County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Wenndy Brito-Gonzalez, deputies from the La Quinta Sheriff’s Station stopped a vehicle near Washington Street and Calle Tampico in La Quinta because they suspected it was involved in a recent hit-and-run.

According to Brito-Gonzalez, deputies arrested the driver for driving under the influence after noticing signs they were impaired. The driver had a prior DUI conviction.

Bryan shared with TMZ in November that growing up as a child actor had lasting negative effects on his life and mental health, contributing to the legal problems he’s faced as an adult, over twenty years later.

Bryan admitted that becoming famous at such a young age – when he was only nine – created pressures he wasn’t ready for. However, he emphasized that this doesn’t excuse his decisions as an adult.

Bryan explained he’s working on improving himself to prevent similar problems in the future.

Bryan stated he understands that domestic violence is never okay. He expressed deep regret for his past mistakes, explaining they were caused by immaturity developed during a difficult upbringing.

Bryan shared that he’s dealt with the difficult consequences of becoming famous young, struggling with addiction, and making bad choices. These issues have caused pain to people he loves and have resulted in multiple run-ins with the law, including driving under the influence and previous incidents of domestic violence.

Bryan stated that recent events, including a restraining order and serious allegations, have been a difficult and sobering experience.

You know, as someone who often talks about building a fulfilling life, I’ve been following this story, and it really struck me when he shared how deeply it’s affected him that people are questioning his parenting because of his legal troubles. It’s one thing to deal with the legal side, but having your skills as a parent come into doubt? That’s incredibly painful, and I think a lot of us can relate to how devastating that would be.

Bryan admitted that being called a “bad dad” really hurt, explaining that his children mean everything to him and he feels he hasn’t always lived up to their expectations.

Bryan, known for his role as Clay in the 2006 film The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, is seeking help through therapy, drug rehabilitation, and anger management to get his life back on track.

Bryan starred alongside Tim Allen, Patricia Richardson, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, and Taran Noah Smith in 203 episodes of the show Home Improvement.

In 2022, Allen told The Hollywood Reporter he was puzzled by Bryan’s behavior. He described Bryan as a good person who had become more complicated as he matured.

Sometimes, all you can do is give someone space to work through things on their own. Eventually, he changed into someone I didn’t recognize, responding to issues that were beyond my influence or control.
