How A Deleted Post-Credits Scene Sparked Ready Or Not 2

The sequel to Ready or Not almost didn’t happen because of a decision made during the first film’s ending. Apparently, a deleted scene after the credits of the original Ready or Not could have prevented Ready or Not 2: Here I Come‘s* creation, as the sequel’s development hinged on a budgetary choice made while finishing the first movie.

The new horror film, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, hits theaters this weekend. Picking up right after the events of the first movie, it follows Grace MacCaullay (Samara Weaving), who is once again forced to play a dangerous game of Hide and Seek. This time, she’s not only trying to survive, but also avoid other competing families and protect her sister, who has now been thrown into the deadly game as well.

The concept for the highly awaited sequel originated with a scene shown after the credits of the first movie. If that short scene hadn’t been included, Ready Or Not 2 might not have been made.

The Story For Ready Or Not 2 Came From A Cut Post-Credits Scene For The First Movie

The movie Ready or Not (2019) concluded with a striking image – a bloodied Grace smoking as the Le Domas family mansion burned. But that wasn’t the original plan for how the film would end.

Screenwriters Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy created a scene for after the credits that didn’t end up in the movie, but it sparked the idea for the next one. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett—who work together as Radio Silence—told Entertainment Weekly about this cut scene, which would have immediately introduced the competing families seen in the sequel, titled Here I Come.

Tyler Gillett told Entertainment Weekly that the scene opens with a group of incredibly rich people gossiping about the Le Domases. Then, they enter through large doors to discover a massive crowd worshipping Le Bail. Gillett recalls the scene ending with someone shouting, ‘Hail Satan!’

The deleted scene aimed to hint at a much larger, unseen story happening behind the scenes. As director Gillett explained to Entertainment Weekly, they wanted to suggest that even though the initial story felt focused and contained, it was actually motivated by something far more significant happening beyond what viewers saw.

You know, there was this really cool scene we had to cut from the first Ready or Not because of money. But it got us thinking – really thinking – about where the story could go, and honestly, that cut scene ended up being the whole inspiration for Ready or Not 2: Here I Come! It’s amazing how something that doesn’t make the final cut can still shape everything.

Fans had to wait seven years for the sequel to Hide and Seek, but for the main character, Grace, the next round began almost instantly after her win in the first film. This new round brings together members of four feuding families, and also introduces Grace’s long-lost sister, Faith (played by Kathryn Newton).

Why A Franchise Like Ready Or Not Doesn’t Need Post-Credits Scenes

The post-credit scene for the movie Ready or Not was removed simply because of budget constraints, but this actually paved the way for a sequel. Director Bettinelli-Olpin explained to Entertainment Weekly that he’s somewhat relieved it was cut, as including it might have prevented a second movie from happening. The scene would have revealed a larger storyline, leaving little material for a follow-up film.

Horror movies usually don’t benefit from scenes after the credits. These scenes either limit possibilities for future installments or hint at sequels that may never happen. Unlike superhero or action films, horror movies aren’t automatically set up for continued series.

Sometimes, movie after-credits scenes hint at sequels that never happen, leaving fans disappointed. Maybe horror series would be better off letting each film tell a complete story, making unexpected sequels like Ready or Not 2: Here I Come a pleasant surprise.
