Urban Legend director Jamie Blanks dies ‘suddenly and unexpectedly’ at age 54

I’m absolutely gutted to hear this. Jamie Blanks, the guy who directedUrban Legend‘ and ‘Valentine’ – two of my all-time favorite horror movies, seriously – passed away on Monday. He was only 54! It’s just… shocking. Those films were so clever and genuinely scary, and I’ve been obsessed with his work for years. It’s a huge loss for horror fans like me.

The director’s family confirmed the news on Friday in an emotional statement posted to X.

We are heartbroken to share that our dear Jamie unexpectedly passed away at his home in Melbourne, Australia, on Monday.

I was so shocked to hear about Jamie’s passing. While he hadn’t been feeling his best lately, it still came as a complete surprise. It’s especially heartbreaking knowing he was right in the middle of planning his next film, still passionately helping other directors and working on his own ideas. He was truly dedicated to his craft until the very end.

Those who knew Jamie were immediately impressed by his talent and warm personality. He was kind, generous, and enthusiastic about both his work and the people in his life. Sadly, his big heart eventually stopped beating.

Blanks is survived by his wife Simone and his son Oliver.

The director, who recently passed away, was a frequent social media user. Shortly before his death, he posted a critical message about people who voted for Trump.

Daniel Blank received his first major directing opportunity at 26 when he was chosen to direct the movie Urban Legend. Hollywood producers had seen a short film he created while studying at film school in Melbourne and were impressed.

Released in 1998, Urban Legend was an instant hit, grossing over $72million.

The movie is known for featuring a cast of popular young actors from the 1990s, like Joshua Jackson, Tara Reid, Rebecca Gayheart, and a relatively unknown Jared Leto at the time.

I was so thrilled to see Robert Englund make an appearance! For those who don’t know, he’s a horror legend – the original Freddy Krueger from the Nightmare on Elm Street movies. It was a really fun surprise!

After the success of Urban Legend, Blanks went on to direct the 2001 slasher Valentine.

David Boreanaz, Denise Richards, Marley Shelton, and a then-rising Katherine Heigl starred in the holiday horror movie.

When it first came out, the movie Valentine received harsh reviews and didn’t do well in theaters. However, it’s recently been re-evaluated by critics and has gained a dedicated following among horror enthusiasts.

Last year, Jamie Lee Curtis shared on social media that her tribute to 1980s slasher films, originally released in 2001, had a special meaning for her.

I cherish the amazing memories I made working with truly wonderful people. It’s heartwarming to see the film has connected with fans over time.

After Valentine, Blanks returned to Australia for his next horror film, 2007’s Storm Warning.

The final movie Blanks directed was 2008’s Long Weekend, starring Jim Caviezel and Claudia Karvan.

Outside of directing, he worked as a composer, largely in the horror genre.

Last April, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Sony has been exploring a reboot of Urban Legend.

Although the story specifics haven’t been revealed, the new version of the film will explore how an urban legend might exist and spread in today’s digital age.

Gary Dauberman, who wrote Annabelle and Until Dawn, will reportedly produce it.

Following Blanks’ deaths, tributes from horror fans have poured in on social media.

One fan shared, “Jamie was a genuinely kind person who clearly enjoyed connecting with his audience. I especially loved his films Valentine and Urban Legend – he had such a unique and beautiful style. It’s a huge loss.”

Someone else wrote, ‘Thank you for all you did for our childhoods and for the horror genre. Rest in peace, you were a legend.’

Another person shared their condolences, saying how much Jamie was loved and how positively he affected the community.
