Nicole Kidman’s “addictive” crime thriller Big Little Lies gets major season 3 update

Those who loved the show Big Little Lies have been eagerly anticipating a new season. Although fans will have to wait a bit longer, there’s some exciting news about what’s happening with the show.

The popular cast – including Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz, and Laura Dern – are all returning for the third season. We now have a clearer picture of the challenges they’ll face.

The popular HBO series is inspired by the novels of Liane Moriarty. Her third book, Big Little Truths, is available for pre-order now, and it will serve as the basis for the show’s third season. The new season picks up the story ten years after the events of the previous one, following the lives of the Monterey Five.

When we last saw Madeline, Celeste, Jane, Renata, and Bonnie, their children were only five years old. Now, those kids are teenagers, dealing with all the typical challenges of high school – the end of childhood fun and the beginning of more serious issues like drugs, sex, and alcohol.

The story begins with unsettling events: a mysterious man starts asking questions around school, and the principal receives a disturbing package – a severed finger in the mail – causing widespread panic and concern in the community.

What to Read Next

This close-knit group will ultimately have to deal with the consequences of the secrets they’ve kept – and the truths they haven’t – from their children, each other, and themselves.

Celeste’s mother-in-law, Mary Louise, is acting strangely, and Celeste isn’t sure if it’s just a sign of aging or something more concerning. Meanwhile, Madeline is dealing with a huge personal crisis, Jane’s marriage is on shaky ground, and Bonnie is discovering that even yoga can’t solve everything. As for Renata, she’s thriving – enjoying the satisfaction of getting even.

Moriarty shared that being back in the beach town with Celeste, Madeline, and Jane was wonderful, like reconnecting with cherished friends. She hopes readers will feel that same heartwarming sense of reunion while reading her book.

I’ve definitely grown as a writer since I published Big Little Lies, and a lot has changed in the world since then. It was really interesting to consider how the characters would have evolved, particularly navigating the difficulties of raising teenagers.

The new book, Big Little Truths, will be published by Penguin Random House on August 25, 2026, and you can pre-order it now.

Big Little Lies seasons 1-2 aired on HBO in the US and on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
