Gail Porter shares tribute to her late ex-boyfriend Keith Flint as The Prodigy celebrates 30 years of Firestarter

I was really touched by Gail Porter’s recent Instagram post. She shared a beautifully heartfelt tribute to her former boyfriend, Keith Flint of The Prodigy, after his passing. It was a really moving way to honor his memory.

The 54-year-old TV star shared an old photo of herself with someone, writing the caption ‘If only I could turn back time.’

Gail and Keith dated from 1999 to 2000. He was found dead at his home on March 4, 2019, at the age of 49.

It’s been six years since Keith passed, and honestly, it hit me so hard today. It made me realize it’s ALSO been thirty years since The Prodigy dropped ‘Firestarter’ – can you believe it?! Seeing Liam and Maxim acknowledge both things together just… wow. It felt like they were remembering him right along with all of us fans. It’s amazing how one song can still feel so connected to someone, even after all this time.

Holly Willoughby joined fans worldwide in celebrating the 30th anniversary of the popular song, first released in 1996.

Holly shared a brief video of Keith performing the song and posted on Instagram, ‘Happy 30th Anniversary to Firestarter… such a great song!’

Liam and Maxim from the rock band also posted a tribute to Keith on Instagram. They wrote about ‘Firestarter’ turning 30, recalling vividly the experience of writing the song.

When Keith first heard the track in the studio, he was ecstatic, immediately wanting to record his vocals. The whole thing – both the song and the video – came together very naturally and spontaneously.

Initially, radio stations wouldn’t play the song and people were hesitant to support it. But it gradually gained popularity on its own, building momentum until it unexpectedly became a huge hit.

‘So yeah, we are proud of this tune and proud of it for Keef. Liam H and M x.’

Gail previously discussed her relationship with Keith in an interview with Louis Theroux.

She said: ‘Keith was the love of my life, I absolutely loved him, I miss him. 

I was on my own, and then I met him. Seriously, from the moment we went out, we just clicked! We spent the whole night laughing, I mean, constantly. It was magical. And that was it, basically – we were inseparable for almost two years. Those were the best years of my life, honestly.

It was nice because we avoided talking about work and just focused on having fun together.

Gail explained that she was working on a show called ‘Wish You Were Here’ when she received an invitation to visit the Maldives. She and Keith went, but he experienced some difficulties while they were there.

When Louis asked if she was struggling with her mental health, Gail replied that while there were a few difficult moments, things eventually improved. She and Louis started swimming and going to the gym regularly, and they both felt much better mentally.

Honestly, seeing them in the Maldives was a dream come true! We all felt so incredibly lucky to be there. And when it was over, I just knew we had to get back to reality, so I told them, “Okay, let’s both get back to work now.”

He struggled to refocus and regain a positive attitude. Despite my efforts to stay optimistic, things just didn’t improve.

‘He was on a downer, I was trying to work my hardest, so it was a shame.’ 

She admitted they both had flaws, explaining that she’d always expected times when they’d struggle individually, and unfortunately, that’s what happened.

I was so shocked to hear about my ex’s passing. Gail actually said she really hadn’t expected it at all, and I totally get that – she was completely stunned when she found out, just like so many of us were.

She openly discussed her personal journey with mental health on Lorraine Kelly’s show, sharing that she’s now feeling much better.

Keith was discovered deceased at his residence in Essex. Tests revealed he had cocaine, alcohol, and codeine in his system at the time of his death.

After investigating his death, the coroner couldn’t determine whether it was a suicide or an accident due to a lack of evidence, and therefore recorded an open verdict.

I was really touched hearing Gail talk about her ex on Lorraine. Even though they separated almost 20 years ago, she admitted she was still completely shocked and saddened by the news of his passing. It just goes to show how lasting an impact someone can have on your life, regardless of how much time has passed.

She was devastated and completely shocked by the news. It was a terrible loss – he was a wonderful person, and she never could have imagined this happening.
