Natasha Hamilton, who rose to fame in the early 2000s as a member of the girl group Atomic Kitten, has revealed she’s struggling with a significant tax debt of £250,000.
Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE this about her! She was only sixteen when she became HUGE, like, a total pop sensation. And it’s so sad, but people just gave her credit cards – literally threw them at her! – back then. She ended up spending years, well into her thirties, just paying off all that debt. It’s insane to think about how much pressure she was under even as a teenager!
Natasha recently revealed that last year was the most difficult of her life, following a period where she struggled with her finances and experienced a mental health crisis.
I remember when I was younger, in my late teens and early twenties, credit cards just seemed to appear everywhere! It was so easy to get caught up in spending. Looking back, I really paid the price for that in my late twenties and thirties – I spent years tackling around £20,000 of debt. It was a tough lesson, but it definitely taught me to be much more careful with my money and avoid unnecessary spending.
Natasha shared that she put all of her resources into her record label, Morpho Records, last year, which has led to a challenging financial period.
She described starting each day in tears, and her two-year-old would always ask why she was so sad.
The television personality now resides in Chester with her family: her husband, Charles Gay, their two-year-old daughter, Kitty, and her children from previous relationships – Josh, 23, Harry, 21, Alfie, 15, and Ella, 11.
Natasha explained that she didn’t fully understand money until after leaving Atomic Kitten, when she received a tax bill exceeding £250,000.
Natasha stepped away from the band in 2004 to address her postnatal depression, and later realized she wasn’t in the right headspace or physical condition to continue doing something she had previously enjoyed.
She admitted that dealing with a large tax bill after her time in Atomic Kitten was really difficult.
Oh my gosh, she actually said it! It all makes so much sense now. She went right back to work to cover that tax bill – can you believe it? – and it completely destroyed her. She had a total breakdown, a complete mental collapse, and she finally admitted it! It’s heartbreaking, but I’m so glad she’s being honest about what happened.
Let me tell you, things got really tough for Natasha around 2007. Like many people, she experienced significant financial losses when the property market crashed – she actually lost a substantial amount of money in real estate at that time.
After experiencing seven months of homelessness – staying in hotels and short-term rentals – Natasha and her husband are now renting a home in Chester.
The singer explained that they sold their previous home, but the financing for their new one wasn’t finalized in time. As a result, they were unexpectedly without a home for seven months.
After her divorce from Riad Erraji in 2013, Natasha had to work very hard financially, as she was left with no assets.
She shared that she manages her money well and always pays her credit card bill in full each month.
Natasha hinted at a possible Atomic Kitten reunion, saying ‘you never know what might happen’.
The band began in 1998 with Liz McClarnon and Kerry Katona as part of the original three members. Kerry left in 2001 when she became pregnant with her first child, and was then replaced by Jenny Frost. Jenny later left the group as well.
I’ll never forget when I first heard about them – a bunch of energetic girls from up north. Honestly, nobody thought they’d become such a massive success, reaching the very top of the music world. It was incredible to watch their journey!
After getting back together last summer to make the BBC documentary Girlbands Forever, Natasha shared that they all enjoyed being together and haven’t ruled out a future reunion.
Natasha recently told The Daily Mail about her experiences with the band, even though they went through some difficult times.
As time passes and memories fade, it’s easy to start questioning whether something actually happened as you remember it.
I definitely have a lot of great memories, even though we faced some tough times. Looking back, the good times were much more significant than the bad.
