Stranger Things star lands next lead role in new Netflix crime drama

Maya Hawke, known for her role in Stranger Things, will star in a new Netflix series called The God of the Woods. She plays Judy Luptack, a clever and determined investigator who is the first woman to work for the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. The series follows Judy as she investigates the disappearance of a young girl at a summer camp in upstate New York.

This drama series unfolds in the Adirondack mountains and follows the Van Laar family over multiple generations. It delves into their hidden secrets and the conflicts arising from their social standing, all while investigating the unsolved disappearance of 13-year-old Barbara Van Laar from her family’s summer camp. The disappearance may be connected to a past tragedy that deeply affected the family.

The story goes on to show how the Van Laars’ fortune and standing begin to fall apart as secrets from the past come to light, exposing the negative effects of their advantages and how they misused their power.

Maya Hawke is known for her role in Stranger Things, but she’s also appeared in other projects. These include the limited series The Good Lord Bird, where she acted with her father, Ethan Hawke, and the 2017 BBC version of Little Women. More recently, she starred in the film Wishful Thinking with Lewis Pullman.

She’s also acted in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, and provided the voice for the character Anxiety in Pixar’s Inside Out 2.

What to Read Next

The upcoming series, The God of the Woods, is adapted from Liz Moore’s novel of the same name. Moore is writing the series alongside Liz Hannah, known for her work on The Post and Lee.

Moore and Hannah are both serving as co-showrunners and executive producers.

I was so excited when Netflix announced they were turning Moore’s book into a series back in December! The writers even put out a statement saying how much they love making TV and can’t wait to bring The God of the Woods to life with Sony and Netflix. They really hope we’ll all connect with the characters – love them or hate them – just like they did.

Moore’s earlier book, Long Bright River, was turned into a TV series by Peacock, with Amanda Seyfried as the lead, in early 2025.

No release date for The God of the Woods has been confirmed.
