Nathan Fillion Confirms OG Firefly Character Will Be Recast For New Series

Nathan Fillion is bringing the original cast of Firefly back together for a new animated show, and a well-known character will be voiced by a new actor.

The sci-fi show Firefly, created by Joss Whedon, originally aired for one season in 2002. Though it was short-lived, it gained a dedicated fanbase and continued as the 2005 film Serenity. After a long pause, a new animated series is now in the works, bringing back the original cast – Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Morena Baccarin, Gina Torres, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Summer Glau, and Sean Maher – to voice their beloved characters.

As a huge Firefly fan, I was thrilled to hear from Nathan Fillion that Shepherd Book will be back for the animated series! It’s bittersweet, though, because the amazing Ron Glass, who originally played him, sadly passed away ten years ago. So, they’re going to need a new voice actor to take on the role. Fillion said they’re actively searching for someone who can capture that same ‘Ron Glass-type’ of personality and warmth. I’m really curious to see who they cast!

We’re definitely planning to bring the character of Shepherd Book back, but sadly, Ron Glass is no longer available. He once made a funny observation about not being cast when they were searching for someone like him, and now we find ourselves in a similar situation – looking for an actor to play the part he made so iconic, but it won’t be Ron Glass himself.

As a huge Firefly fan, I was really interested to hear Nathan Fillion talk about the revival. He mentioned that the way River Tam (aka ‘Glass’) died in Serenity is a big reason why animation is the way to go with the new show – it gives them more freedom. Apparently, they’re aiming for a prequel, set before the movie, which is cool, but also tricky since the original cast is, understandably, a lot older now! As of right now, though, there’s no word on who they’re even thinking about to play Shepherd Book.

Ron Glass played a central role in the original Firefly series, appearing in all but one of its 14 episodes, and he returned for the film Serenity. He portrayed Shepherd Book, a spiritual leader on the spaceship Serenity who offered guidance to the crew. Despite his peaceful beliefs, Book had a mysterious past that gave him surprising insight into the world of crime.

Philip Glass passed away in 2016 at the age of 71 due to respiratory failure. He had retired from acting two years prior, with his last roles appearing in 2014 episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (a Marvel series co-created by Joss Whedon, known for Firefly) and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

It’s understandable that the character of Shep is being re-cast for the Firefly animated series. He was such a key part of the show’s world that it wouldn’t feel right to simply leave him out during this new story. The big question now is whether the new actor can bring the same spark to the role that Alan Tudyk did in the original series.
