The Batman 2 Almost Starred This Oscar Winner & Joker Star

Robert De Niro was considered for a role in The Batman 2, but he ultimately decided not to join the cast.

The Batman 2, the follow-up to the 2022 hit The Batman, is coming to US theaters next year. Directed again by Matt Reeves, the film continues the Batman’s crime-fighting story and stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman.

What is the update on The Batman 2 and Robert De Niro?

Production for the next Batman movie starts later this year, and some of the actors have now been announced. Sebastian Stan will play Harvey Dent, and Scarlett Johansson will also be appearing in the film.

The film is currently struggling to find an actor to play Harvey’s father, Christopher Dent. While Warner Bros. reportedly considered well-known actors like Daniel Craig, Stellan Skarsgård, and Brad Pitt, none of them accepted the role, and casting is still underway.

Jeff Sneider, writing on Twitter, suggested Robert De Niro as an interesting choice to play Christopher Dent. He noted that De Niro hasn’t been discussed much, likely because of his age, but pointed out he could believably play a father to a 43-year-old and would be a strong fit for a crime film.

The next day, Sneider revealed, “Here’s a serious update: Soon after I tweeted that, someone told me De Niro was actually offered the part… but he turned it down. Too bad!”

Robert De Niro, known for his role as Murray Franklin in the 2019 film Joker, is an Academy Award-winning actor with wins for The Godfather Part II and Raging Bull. He’s also received Oscar nominations for several other acclaimed films, including Taxi Driver, The Deer Hunter, Awakenings, Cape Fear, Silver Linings Playbook, The Irishman, and Killers of the Flower Moon. Later this year, in November, he’ll be back as Jack Byrnes in the new movie Focker In-Law.

The Batman 2 currently has an October 1, 2027, release date.
