Watching Christian Petzold’s quietly powerful “Miroirs No. 3,” you might find yourself wanting a clear, comforting resolution to the story’s sadness. However, that would actually miss the point of this film. Petzold carefully builds the emotional connections, and the movie gains its impact by subtly revealing feelings over time, rather than offering easy answers.
Director Petzold often tells stories in a subtle and intriguing way, as seen in his previous psychological dramas like “Barbara,” “Transit,” and “Afire.” His new film, “Miroirs No. 3,” which centers on a strange recovery from an accident, is a bit more gentle in tone, but still explores complex ideas about hidden identities and the longing within his characters.
The film opens with Laura (Paula Beer) appearing lost and disconnected – we first see her on a freeway overpass, then walking near the water, looking distant and wearing worn clothes. Shortly after, she’s on a road trip with her boyfriend and another couple, but still seems uneasy. During the drive, she unexpectedly makes eye contact with a woman standing near a house, leaving the audience to wonder what that connection means – is Laura reaching out, or simply curious, and who initiated the look?
Movies
Known for intense films like ‘Phoenix’ and ‘Transit,’ German director Christian Petzold found himself enjoying a change of pace with his new comedy, ‘Afire.’ And he’s just as surprised by this as the audience is.
Laura demands to be taken back to Berlin, and her frustrated boyfriend finally gives in, driving her to the train station. Shortly after leaving, a terrible crash occurs just past a woman’s house, out of view. The woman, Betty, rushes to help. The boyfriend is killed, and Betty brings a shaken but mostly unharmed Laura back to her home. Surprisingly, Laura asks to stay with Betty instead of going with the paramedics, which Betty seems happy about. A shot shows Laura and Betty looking at each other through doorways – Laura inside, Betty outside – creating a strange, peaceful connection, suggesting they both sense a significant change is coming.
It’s easy to see that Betty, a kind and lonely woman, hopes Laura will bring new life into her quiet world, and Laura, a troubled piano student, feels equally drawn to Betty’s peaceful existence. Their connection quickly blossoms thanks to strong performances by the actors, making their shared life of gardening and cooking feel genuine. However, Betty’s husband, Michael, and son, Max, who run a nearby garage, are initially disturbed by Laura’s arrival. Their eventual acceptance feels forced, suggesting a deeper, more difficult truth beneath this seemingly simple and charming story.
“Miroirs No. 3” feels hopeful and gentle, showing everyday moments like bike rides and family dinners, but with a subtle sense of something unresolved looming. Director Angela Schanelec skillfully blends honesty with ambiguity, making this delicate rescue story both smart and emotionally resonant. The film concludes with a beautiful performance of Ravel’s piece of the same name, which subtly conveys the characters’ underlying tension and eventual relief. Remarkably, despite the emotional weight of the story, the film ends on a light and hopeful note, suggesting that finding peace and connection will always remain a beautiful mystery.
