She was a sex symbol of the Sixties who has had no shortage of potential suitors over the years.
Now in her seventies, Lulu has chosen to remain single, explaining that although she sometimes feels lonely, she prefers it to the possibility of experiencing more heartbreak.
Her first experience with heartbreak came as a teen when she began dating Davy Jones of The Monkees. They met after she opened for his band at a concert in Wembley, England, in 1967.
They connected immediately, but Lulu was heartbroken to discover he’d been in a long-term relationship with a woman named Linda Haines, who was expecting a baby.
She remembered being completely devastated when she found out he’d been living with another woman while he was dating her. He’d been seeing her and planned a date with the woman, all while keeping it a secret.
However, the next year Lulu met Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees, and they quickly fell in love, marrying just a few months later.
Lulu, age 77, recently shocked her followers by revealing that her late husband may have had a child with someone else. Despite their eventual separation, this unexpected news came to light this week.
The singer recently discovered that the musician secretly had a son from a short-term relationship, likely while they were married. She and the musician had separated in 1973 and didn’t have any children together, but she has solid evidence confirming his paternity.
This news likely caused Lulu further pain, especially considering she previously described feeling like a failure when her marriage to the Bee Gees singer ended in 1973.
Lulu and her future husband fell in love immediately after meeting backstage at the Top of the Pops in 1969. She was 20 years old at the time, and he was 19.
They married within a year, and Lulu later reflected that ‘going steady’ didn’t quite capture the depth of their connection.
‘Going unsteady might better sum up the way we fell in and out with each other.’
Their relationship started well, but Maurice’s drinking problem caused it to weaken over time. Later in life, Lulu herself began to struggle with alcohol, developing an addiction in her sixties.
During an interview on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories, Lulu recalled feeling like she and her then-partner were on top of the world and living a glamorous life.
While the drinking contributed to the problems, the real issue was getting married. We would have been better off just having a relationship.
I knew we had to break up. He was heartbroken, but despite how much I cared for him, I realized I wasn’t actually in love with him – I think I was just in love with the idea of being in love.
Lulu recently shared with the Daily Mail that looking back on her marriage to Maurice, she wonders if the timing was right. She was only 20 when they wed, and feels that if they’d met and married later in life, perhaps in her 30s, things might have turned out differently.
Lulu is heartbroken to discover that her late husband, Maurice, who passed away in 2003 from a heart attack, may have had an affair during their marriage. Their relationship, once full of promise, ended with this painful revelation.
When she found out Maurice had another child in secret, she admitted she hadn’t bothered to find out the birthdate, saying it didn’t matter to her.
Instead, Lulu had set her sights on looking for husband number two.
She explained to the Daily Mail that she was raised to believe the ideal life involved a traditional setup – a house with a white picket fence and a family with three children – but she now realizes that expectation isn’t realistic.
Things didn’t turn out as expected. Lulu, recently divorced, began a passionate relationship with David Bowie, whom she described as incredibly alluring and possessing a captivating personality that was hard to resist.
She admitted she was really flattered because he was popular and she wasn’t. He was the cool one, and she felt like she didn’t measure up.
It didn’t fundamentally change who I am, but it definitely had an impact on my life. Then I met and married John Frieda, and my relationship with David Bowie ended.
Lulu married a famous hairdresser in 1976, and they had a son named Jordan the next year.
After struggling to have another child and experiencing a heartbreaking loss in 1998, the couple started to grow distant as John’s successful hairdressing business demanded more of his attention.
John ended the marriage in 1990, telling Lulu they were incompatible and that he wanted a divorce. He explained they’d never really had anything in common and that he knew what he wanted for his future – and it didn’t include her.
Looking back on her divorce, Lulu explained to The Telegraph that she believes John left her in 1988 after she had a miscarriage. She admitted she hadn’t acknowledged the problems in her marriage and hadn’t realized they were growing apart. She expected to see warning signs, and while they might have been there, she didn’t notice them at the time.
While she was heartbroken by the divorce, her family were the opposite.
She remembered people disapproving of her feelings for John. They’d also noticed how it led to years of self-reflection and seeking professional help through therapy and counseling.
Despite having been married twice, she spoke fondly of both her husbands. She explained, ‘I truly loved both Maurice and John. You can’t pretend those feelings weren’t real just because the relationship ended. Those connections were genuine, and I learned and grew from each one.’
While Lulu did not marry again she was said to have enjoyed relationships with younger men.
She became connected to Take That’s Jason Orange after working with the band on their 1993 hit, “Relight My Fire.” She was 45 years old at the time, while Jason was 23.
She called their connection something ‘special,’ but quickly added that despite finding him very attractive, nothing romantic ever occurred.
Jason remained silent about the rumors of a romantic relationship. However, during an interview on The Jonathan Ross Show, when Take That was asked about Lulu, Howard Donald jokingly but explicitly stated that Jason was the one who had a relationship with her.
In 2002, rumors surfaced connecting her to a younger man after she was seen with actor Stuart Manning at a party hosted by Victoria and David Beckham during the World Cup.
Lulu, then 53, was dating Stuart, who was 21. She described him as a great person, but clarified that their relationship was casual and not serious. She admitted she’s attracted to men of all ages, both younger and older, and doesn’t have a preference.
However, in recent years, Lulu has found comfort in staying single.
In 2014, Lulu admitted that she feared feeling lonely but was learning to love herself.
She shared with the Daily Mail that she found getting older difficult. She experienced a lot of conflicting emotions about it, and also worried about losing her independence – specifically, she’d lie awake at night concerned about a time when she might need help taking care of herself.
‘Of being a burden. Of feeling lonely.’
I always felt for her, even when she was lonely, but she came to understand that finding a partner wasn’t going to magically fix things. It wasn’t the answer she was looking for, and she realized that on her own.
She explained that marriage wouldn’t fix her issues. While she occasionally wished she had a partner to share life with – someone to make things a little easier – she didn’t believe it was a solution to her problems. Simply having someone by your side can definitely make life feel more manageable, she admitted.
Someone once pointed out the difference between having company for activities and having someone to simply be with. It’s a feeling I understand well – you can’t truly connect with admiration or applause; you need genuine companionship.
By 2024, she felt she’d found a good rhythm in her life, explaining that while she was surrounded by love, it wasn’t focused on a single person.
She’s moved past actively seeking relationships. She explained that while it might have been important to her when she was younger, it isn’t a focus now. She’s more interested in a broader feeling of love and connection.
Even though Lulu is enjoying being single, she’s understandably preoccupied with her past marriage now that she’s found out Maurice might have had a child with someone else while they were together.
I was completely shocked to hear this week, on the Louis Theroux Podcast, that my ex might have a son. Apparently, it could have happened while we were still married, and she just recently found out. It’s just… a lot to process, honestly.
Someone told me a story about a man who had a one-night stand, and I can’t recall the year it happened. They had a son, and genetic testing has definitively proven the man is the father – it’s confirmed he’s related to the boy, Maurice.
Maurice and his second wife, Yvonne Spenceley, have two children: a daughter named Samantha and a son named Adam.
In 2019, Nick Endacott-Gibb, adopted as an infant, said he discovered he was likely the biological son of British performer Patti Nolder. A DNA test showed a ‘100 percent match’ between him and Adam, Maurice’s son, supporting his claim.
Nick, who also plays music, said some family members still doubted his story.
He expressed frustration that some family members continue to question his DNA test results from two years ago, instead of focusing on and appreciating his music, which he believes demonstrates the truth.
Nick spent his life looking for his birth parents, and in 2003, he finally met Patti. He learned she’d worked as a studio manager with the Bee Gees, and was close to the band members – Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb.
Nick grew up in a comfortable home in Ashdown Forest, East Sussex, and always thought his father was Chris Andrews, the singer of the 1960s rock group Fleur de Lys. However, a DNA test in 2009 proved that wasn’t true.
After learning from Patti’s sister that Maurice might be his father, he underwent three facial recognition tests. The results strongly suggested a family connection, with one test showing a 95.2% match.
Maurice’s widow Yvonne refused his request for a DNA test, despite years of begging.
Nick was surprised to learn that Maurice had a son, Adam, who had previously submitted his DNA to Ancestry.co.uk. A saliva test Nick sent to a genealogy company confirmed the match and finally provided him with the information he was seeking.
When asked about the possibility that Maurice was the father of her child, Lulu explained she hadn’t bothered to find out the birth date, stating it simply wasn’t a priority for her.
She admitted she used to be far too serious. ‘I know it’s surprising to hear,’ she said, ‘but I really think that was the case.’
Ugh, it just kills me when people don’t get that life isn’t simple! Seeing things as only right or wrong? So limiting! I’ve been through a lot, learned the hard way, and honestly, everything is just…shades of grey. It’s frustrating to watch others not realize that!
I’ve experienced both incredible successes and difficult times, just like everyone else. I’m a normal person in that regard – I’m no exception.
I’ve always been driven by curiosity and a need to understand things. I think that’s been a key factor in helping me navigate the challenges and successes I’ve experienced throughout my life.
