HBO is known for attracting great actors, but the cast of is truly exceptional. The show, based on the popular novel by Liane Moriarty, was destined to have big names – Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman secured the rights to adapt the book just weeks after it was published in 2014.
Originally, the story of Big Little Lies was planned as a movie starring and produced by Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman. But early in development, it changed direction and became a limited series. David E. Kelley, a well-known TV writer and producer, was brought on as the creator, and the show quickly attracted a talented cast of award-winning and popular actors.
HBO’s Big Little Lies was a huge success, earning numerous awards – including Primetime Emmys for multiple actors and for Outstanding Limited Series. Due to its popularity, the show was renewed for a second season, transforming it from a miniseries into a regular TV show. Recently, in 2025 – six years after the second season aired – a third season of Big Little Lies was announced, demonstrating the series’ lasting popularity and the continued appeal of its cast.
Big Little Lies’ A-List Cast Made The Thriller Series Iconic
When Big Little Lies first aired, it had a lasting impact on television. The HBO series debuted in 2017, a time often considered the peak of high-quality TV drama, when viewers had many acclaimed shows to choose from. But many of these popular series, such as Breaking Bad and Mad Men, focused on stories driven by male characters, often featuring flawed and complex antiheroes.
Big Little Lies challenged expectations by being a high-quality series focused on women’s experiences. It tackled important issues like motherhood, how women are perceived by society, abuse, and the broader problem of sexism. Shows dealing with these topics are often seen as low-brow entertainment, and some critics felt that’s all Big Little Lies was. However, the show’s famous actors made it impossible to dismiss.
During the 2010s, the line between movie and television actors began to blur. Previously, movie stars were generally considered more prestigious than TV actors, but throughout the decade, many famous film actors started leading roles in critically acclaimed television series.
I’ve noticed a trend where limited-series dramas rely heavily on just one or two recognizable faces. But Big Little Lies really stood out – it wasn’t just Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman carrying the show, though they were fantastic. What impressed me was the strength of the entire cast. You had Oscar winner Laura Dern, the always-compelling Shailene Woodley, and Zoë Kravitz, who was really starting to break out, all delivering phenomenal performances as these complex mothers at the heart of the story – the now-famous ‘Monterey Five.’

The men in Big Little Lies deliver powerful performances, especially Adam Scott and Alexander Skarsgård, who play the husbands of Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman’s characters. Their roles could have easily been simple or over-the-top – particularly Skarsgård’s – but both actors add impressive depth and complexity to the show.
Since Big Little Lies focuses on mothers and features a significant bullying storyline involving their children, the young actors had a lot riding on their performances. Luckily, they delivered, with Iain Armitage as Ziggy Chapman—the new student who becomes the target of bullying—being especially impressive.
Even though many viewers felt the second season of Big Little Lies wasn’t as good as the first, it still managed to attract Meryl Streep – one of the most renowned actors in Hollywood. She played Perry Wright’s mother, Mary Louise, and fit seamlessly into the already talented cast, bringing a subtly manipulative dynamic to the show.
How The Big Little Lies Cast Disappears Into Their Performances
As a film buff, I think Big Little Lies definitely benefited from its amazing cast, but it’s a tricky thing – sometimes a lot of famous faces can pull you out of the story. Luckily, that didn’t happen here! The actors were all doing something a little different with the kinds of roles we’re used to seeing them play, and honestly, the acting was so good they completely disappeared into their characters. It was really impressive.
Reese Witherspoon is known for portraying determined and spirited women, like Elle Woods, and those qualities definitely shine through in her character, Madeline Mackenzie. But Madeline is different – Witherspoon brings a sharper, more intense energy to the role. Madeline is a complex woman, fueled by anger, and she’s hiding a damaging secret.
Nicole Kidman has faced criticism for often playing similar roles – wealthy women with troubled marriages who enjoy luxury comforts and ocean views. However, it was in Big Little Lies that this character type truly came to life. She rightfully won an Emmy for her portrayal of Celeste Wright, a surprisingly complex character who deserves more recognition.
Alexander Skarsgård, an Emmy winner for his role in Big Little Lies, is a master at playing characters who are both charming and threatening, and he showcased this talent brilliantly in the show. He played Perry Wright, a deeply abusive man with a history of sexual violence. While the show never condones his actions, Skarsgård’s performance made it understandable—though not excusable—why Celeste remained with him, adding layers to the difficult question of why victims stay in abusive relationships.
Laura Dern completes the Emmy-winning cast of Big Little Lies, and she clearly enjoys playing the challenging role of Renata Klein. Initially, it’s easy to dislike Renata because of her perceived arrogance and quickness to blame Ziggy for problems with Amabella. But as the show reveals more about Renata’s life, we see how difficult it is for her to balance a demanding career with motherhood, and Dern portrays this struggle with a lot of heart, making her a much more sympathetic character.
Each actor in Big Little Lies delivers such a strong performance that entire articles could be dedicated to just one of them. The show isn’t simply relying on famous faces; the actors truly have the talent to match their reputations.
Who Will Be In Big Little Lies Season 3?
When news of a third season of Big Little Lies was confirmed in the fall of 2025, everyone immediately wondered who from the original cast would return. While details are still scarce, we can make some educated guesses based on what’s been revealed so far.
Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman are confirmed to return for season three of Big Little Lies, both as actors and executive producers. The new season will be based on Big Little Truths, the upcoming sequel novel by Liane Moriarty, scheduled to be released in late 2026.
The new story jumps forward ten years after the first book, and the main characters are now dealing with the challenges of raising teenage children. We can expect to see the original Monterey Five, along with their husbands and kids, return for season 3.
David E. Kelley, the creator of Big Little Lies, recently shared some good news for fans: season 3 is likely to begin filming this fall. While the cast hasn’t been officially announced yet, it sounds like viewers can expect to return to Monterey fairly soon.
