Fans stunned as Val Kilmer is resurrected onscreen via AI for final film role… one year after death

Val Kilmer will essentially ‘return’ to the screen for one last performance using artificial intelligence, about a year after passing away from throat cancer.

The famous actor passed away on April 1st, 2025, at 65 years old. He had already committed to appearing in the movie, As Deep as the Grave.

Due to health issues, the actor couldn’t film his scenes. Instead, filmmakers used AI technology to recreate his performance as Father Fintan, a Catholic priest and Native American spiritualist.

Val Kilmer’s family, including his children Mercedes and Jack, have approved the use of artificial intelligence to recreate his younger appearance and voice, using both archival footage and material from his later life provided by the family.

Everyone in his family emphasized how significant the film was, and Val was eager to be involved. He believed it was a crucial story he wanted to associate himself with.

That support gave me the courage to move forward, because ultimately, this is what Val envisioned, even if some find it unconventional,” said writer and director Coerte Voorhees in an interview with Variety.

Variety also published the first AI generated image of Kilmer in the film.

His daughter shared a statement with the publication, expressing her support and explaining that her father consistently embraced new technologies as a way to enhance creative storytelling.

We’re all paying tribute to his memory and the special quality he brought to this film, as he was a key part of it.

Abigail Lawrie, Tom Felton, Wes Studi, and Abigail Breslin all star in the film.

Many fans reacted negatively to the news of Kilmer’s return, expressing their disappointment on X (formerly Twitter) in response to a Variety article.

Honestly, it doesn’t matter to me if they had the okay to do this – it just feels wrong. I really believe creating digital versions of deceased people using AI should be against the law. It feels deeply unsettling, in my opinion.

Someone else commented that no matter how much justification is offered, the situation remains deeply unethical and driven by greed, and the family involved should feel embarrassed.

As a huge Top Gun fan, I was so moved to see Kilmer back as Iceman! It wasn’t the first time they’d used AI to help him with a role, and honestly, it was incredibly effective. Seeing him on screen again really got to me – it was a truly emotional moment.

It’s been so touching to see clips from his last movie role resurface online after hearing the news of his passing. Seeing him alongside Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick is particularly poignant – it’s a beautiful reminder of his talent and a lovely way to remember him. As someone who always champions celebrating life’s moments, I think revisiting his work is a wonderful tribute.

Val Kilmer became well-known for playing Iceman in the original Top Gun film from 1986, and Tom Cruise, now 62, was instrumental in bringing him back for a return appearance as the character.

Val Kilmer had trouble with his voice after a throat cancer diagnosis and a tracheotomy in 2014. However, filmmakers used artificial intelligence to recreate his voice for a recent hit movie in 2022.

Viewers were deeply moved when Iceman, now an Admiral, reappeared on screen with Tom Cruise’s character, Maverick.

Iceman spoke to Maverick by typing messages, and artificial intelligence was used to recreate Val Kilmer’s voice, allowing some of his lines to be spoken aloud.

Following their heartfelt talk – where Iceman urged Maverick to leave the past behind – the movie showed Maverick mourning his friend at a funeral.

The heartfelt scenes originally brought many viewers to tears, and fans are now revisiting that touching moment following the news of Kilmer’s passing.

The famous actor, best known for his roles in movies like Top Gun and Batman, died of pneumonia on April 1, 2025, according to a death certificate obtained by TMZ. This followed an announcement last week by his daughter, who shared that her father had been battling a lung infection.

The official cause of death, as listed on the Los Angeles County Department of Health certificate, was a combination of breathing problems and tongue cancer. Specifically, the person suffered from both sudden and long-term respiratory failure, along with squamous cell carcinoma at the base of the tongue.

Squamous cell carcinoma, or laryngeal cancer, is a cancer that starts in the flat cells which line the throat, including the voice box (larynx) and upper throat (pharynx).

Val Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer eleven years ago, and emergency surgery to open his airway left him with lasting changes to his voice.

The actor announced in 2020 that he had been cancer-free for four years. However, his death certificate shows the cancer unfortunately returned.

Other things that can contribute to this issue include poor nutrition, and a rare connection between the windpipe and skin that sometimes happens after a breathing tube is removed.
