As a huge fan of great TV, I still think that this show, which first came out on Netflix way back in 2015, has one of the best casts the streaming service has ever put together. It’s been around for eleven years now, and honestly, the way they assembled that group of actors for this three-season psychological thriller and family drama is just phenomenal. It really holds up, and I’d argue it’s the best ensemble cast Netflix has produced.
Shows like Stranger Things have launched the careers of many new actors, but this series stands out because it brought together a group of already-established, incredibly talented performers. What’s really amazing is that most of them were in the first season together, making it, in my opinion, the best cast Netflix has ever put together.
Netflix’s Bloodline Has An Incredibly Stacked Ensemble Cast
Netflix’s Bloodline boasts an impressive cast, featuring stars like Kyle Chandler, Ben Mendelsohn, Linda Cardellini, and the late Sam Shepard. Chandler and Mendelsohn play the central brothers, John and Danny Rayburn, while Cardellini portrays their sister, Meg. Sissy Spacek plays their mother, Sally, and Shepard appears as the family’s patriarch, Robert, in his last television role. The series also includes performances by Jamie McShane, Owen Teague, Chloë Sevigny, John Leguizamo, David Zayas, Beau Bridges, and many others.
Despite a strong start and an Emmy win for its first season, the show Bloodline is often overlooked due to its less popular later seasons. Ben Mendelsohn delivers a standout performance, earning three Emmy nominations and one win for his portrayal of the troubled black sheep of the seemingly flawless Rayburn family. Set in the beautiful Florida Keys, Bloodline expertly contrasts idyllic scenery with a dark and compelling family drama, brought to life by a remarkably talented cast.
The cast of Bloodline is incredibly strong. Norbert Leo Butz delivers a particularly memorable performance as Kevin Rayburn, and Enrique Murciano is compelling as Marco Diaz, a detective who becomes Meg’s love interest. Jacinda Barrett and Katie Finneran both convincingly portray women who have married into the troubled Rayburn family, and James Jordan, known for his role in Landman, makes an appearance in a later episode of Bloodline.
Shows focused on character, like Bloodline, really hinge on having the right actors. That’s why Bloodline remains interesting to watch, even though many critics feel the writing quality declined after the first season. The show excels at creating a unique atmosphere that draws you in. Despite the characters being complicated, flawed, and often making bad decisions, the beautiful tropical setting gives a sense that things could still work out, subtly masking a feeling of impending disaster and hopelessness.

If you enjoy intense family dramas like Succession or Shameless, Bloodline is still a great watch, largely thanks to its incredible acting. The show features characters you become truly invested in – a sure sign the casting was spot-on. Although it occasionally leans into over-the-top drama, Bloodline effectively mixes moments of tension and emotional intensity with glimpses into the past through flashbacks, and even a touch of the supernatural, to create a compelling story.
Matthew Chandler is a major highlight of the show, earning two Emmy nominations for playing the charming John Rayburn. He’s featured prominently throughout the series, and the central story revolves around his character’s struggle to protect his family’s reputation by hiding a troubling past. He’s essentially the last person standing trying to keep everything under wraps.
I really enjoyed Bloodline, and it reminded me a lot of The Waterfront from last year – that show didn’t get renewed, but it was visually stunning. If you’re looking for something new on Netflix, I definitely recommend checking out Bloodline. Even if the story doesn’t completely grab you, the first season is super thrilling, it’s set in a beautiful tropical location, and the acting is just phenomenal. It’s a great use of your subscription!
