Omni-Man’s ‘Invincible’ Season 4 Reveal Is a Superman Horror Story

Spoilers for Invincible Season 4 are below!

Season 4 of Invincible kicks off with a strong three-episode premiere on Prime Video. The beginning focuses on catching viewers up with all the characters after the events of Season 3 – showing us what’s happening with Mark, Eve, and Ollie, and hinting at the new dangers to come. The second episode dives into a particularly disturbing backstory, revealing parallels between another character and the dark side of Superman’s father, Omni-Man.

In Season 4, Episode 2, “I’ll Give You the Grand Tour,” the story focuses on characters like Omni-Man and Alan, and what’s happening on the planet Viltrum. The episode builds on the established fact that there are very few Viltrumites remaining—less than 50—hinting at a possible way to defeat them. While the season seems to be preparing for a major conflict with the Viltrumite empire, this episode also reveals how their population decreased so dramatically. Drawing inspiration from the Superman mythos, but with a dark twist, the story of Viltrum offers a bleak take on the fate of Superman’s home world and its destruction.

‘Invincible’ Was Always Meant To Mirror Superman

Omni-Man is designed to challenge typical superhero characteristics. He’s often compared to Superman, and rightfully so, as the influence of that iconic hero is clear. Robert Kirkman, the creator of Invincible, has explained that his darker take on Superman was originally even more similar to the source material – Omni-Man was initially going to be called Supra-Man before a name change. According to bonus content for Invincible Vol. 1: Family Matters (as reported by ScreenRant), Kirkman shared this detail.

Interestingly, when Invincible was originally titled Bulletproof, Omni-Man’s name was going to be Supra-Man. However, Image Comics decided to change it, worried that the similarity to DC Comics’ Superman would cause legal issues, especially since the names sounded nearly identical when spoken aloud.

Even though the character originally named ‘Supra-Man’ had to be renamed, Robert Kirkman’s Invincible is clearly a creative take on classic superhero tropes – the same tropes that Superman helped establish. Both the comic and the Prime Video series explore the impact of immense power and the unintended harm it can cause. Omni-Man’s villainous side is similar to the darker version of Superman seen in the Injustice games and comics, as he desires to control the world. James Gunn has even played with this idea, suggesting in his upcoming DC Universe plans that Superman’s parents might share traits with the ruthless Viltrumites rather than the traditionally selfless Kryptonians of the past.

The planet Viltrum, home to the Viltrumites, shares similarities with different versions of Krypton, and will be explored further in the upcoming Supergirl series. However, even though DC has presented darker takes on Superman’s story, Invincible pushes the Viltrumite narrative to an unexpected extreme. The creators of Invincible deliberately challenged themselves to find ways to make the devastation of a planet and the loss of billions of lives even more horrific, and they didn’t shy away from showing the brutal details.

“I’ll Give You the Grand Tour” Is ‘Invincible’s Gruesome Take on Krypton’s Destruction

The show cleverly mirrors the destruction of Superman’s planet Krypton to highlight the impending doom of the Viltrumites, playing on themes of arrogance and decline. We see a young Nolan practicing his brutal methods by training other Viltrumites, a scene that’s quickly revealed as a traditional Viltrumite test – one that firmly establishes this isn’t Krypton. But the episode doesn’t dwell on the past; it immediately jumps into a terrifying story of widespread destruction, as the Viltrumites begin a massive and deadly purge.

The story soon focuses on a deadly virus that wipes out billions of people on Viltrum. This virus, known as the Scourge, was specifically created to kill Viltrumites and proves incredibly effective. The once nearly invincible Viltrum Empire is brought to its knees, with massive numbers falling ill. Although the Viltrumites aren’t portrayed as heroes due to their cruel and violent behavior, their planet meets a particularly gruesome end. Unlike Superman, who watched his home world destroyed by an explosion, the Viltrumites are wiped out by a disease, resulting in some of the most disturbing scenes in the show.

As the Viltrumites succumb to the pandemic, massive piles of bodies accumulate, creating a dark and uncertain time for the planet. Unlike the instant destruction of Krypton, Viltrum doesn’t explode; instead, it experiences a slow, devastating decline. Characters desperately try to find the cause and stop the spread, but their efforts fail. Surprisingly, the planet itself remains intact, leaving the few survivors with the horrific task of dealing with billions of corpses. One of the most disturbing scenes shows a ring encircling Viltrum – a ring composed of countless dead bodies, serving as a chilling testament to the Viltrumites’ actions.
