‘Monarch’ Season 2’s Mysterious New Titan is Something We’ve Never Seen Before

The Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is introducing a completely unique Titan in its second season, which arrives next month. While the first season featured impressive creatures like Godzilla, the Ion Dragon, Frostbark, the Endoswarmers, Bramblebore, Mother Longlegs, and King Kong, the newly revealed Titan X – shown in the latest trailer – is unlike anything viewers have seen before.

I was reading an interview with Tory Tunnell, one of the executive producers, in SFX Magazine, and she said this new sea monster is going to be unlike any kaiju we’ve seen before. It’s making me wonder if the theories about it being a giant octopus, like Oodako, might not be quite right.

We’re thrilled to introduce this new monster! Working with VFX supervisor Sean Konrad, we’ve created something truly dynamic and unlike anything audiences have seen before.

Konrad, a designer with experience on films like Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and Jack Quaid’s Novocaine, often bases his creature designs on things he’s seen in the real world, particularly from the ocean depths, according to Tunnell.

It’s surprising to learn about new creatures, especially when they seem so unbelievable. When Sean reveals these Titans, it really makes you question what’s real and where these things could exist. We put a lot of effort into grounding these Titans in reality, focusing on believable details like how they move and what powers them, so everything feels connected and makes sense.

‘Monarch’s Wyatt Russell Teases Season 2

Apple TV+

Wyatt Russell, who stars in Monarch, has been building excitement for Season 2 since filming finished last March. The first season ended with his character, Lee Shaw (played by his father, Kurt Russell), making a selfless sacrifice to save Cate, May, and Keiko as they escaped the Hollow Earth. Now, with a two-year jump forward in time, fans will finally learn what happened between the events of Monarch and the 2021 film Godzilla vs. Kong.

Russell told Collider that exploring this story in the Apple TV show not only makes the mystery more complex, but also strengthens the relationships between the main characters.

Season two of Monarch was exciting because we built on ideas from the first season. While I can’t reveal too much, I can say the central mystery becomes even more complex. We introduce new and interesting monsters, and generally raise the stakes – especially when it comes to the characters’ relationships. Those relationships are really put to the test this season.

Even though it looked like Russell’s father died in Season 1, he’s returning for more adventures in Monarch. Season 2 premieres on Apple TV on Friday, February 27th, and new episodes will be released each week.
