Heath Ledger’s lookalike daughter Matilda steps out days after 17 year anniversary of late actor’s Oscar win

Matilda Ledger, who bears a striking resemblance to her late father Heath Ledger, was spotted in New York City recently. The sighting came 17 years after Heath Ledger received an Oscar after his death.

The 20-year-old, whose parents are the late actor and Michelle Williams, was seen taking a casual walk through the busy city to get coffee.

In 2009, Heath Ledger posthumously won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Dark Knight. His family accepted the award on his behalf during the 81st Academy Awards ceremony, a very emotional moment for everyone.

It was released just over a year after his accidental drug overdose in January 2008.

Matilda dressed down for the recent outing, wearing light blue jeans and a simple black hoodie.

She also put on black flats and slung a black tote bag over her shoulder.

Matilda was seen enjoying the warmer weather in the city and later picked up an iced coffee.

She was born in October 2005, just a year after her parents, Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams, started dating. They met while filming Brokeback Mountain.

Heath Ledger won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar at the 2009 Academy Awards, which took place in February. It was awarded posthumously.

He received the award for his widely praised portrayal of the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s film, The Dark Knight, which was released after the actor’s passing.

The award was accepted by his father, mother and sister as they gave moving speeches.

His father also thanked Warner Bros. and Nolan for giving Heath the freedom to create and develop his unique Joker character.

He explained that receiving this award would have meant the world to Heath, confirming his dedication and finally earning the acceptance of his fellow actors and colleagues in the industry he cared for so deeply.

His mother shared that they were deeply honored and humbled by the recognition he was receiving with the award.

She mentioned his family is focusing on celebrating his successes. Then, his sister Kate praised his remarkable performance as the Joker.

They had even mentioned this day in conversation, and while they deeply miss their friend, they happily accept the award in honor of their wonderful daughter, Matilda.

Nearly two years after Matilda was born, it was revealed that Ledger and Williams had separated.

In a May 2025 interview on Dax Shepherd’s Armchair Expert podcast, the actress spoke openly about the actor, who is no longer living.

Williams mentioned that she briefly knew him while he was recovering, and she doesn’t think she’s ever fallen in love so fast with anyone.

Shepherd described the boy as truly special, saying she could sense a deep sadness in him that deeply affected her.

“I was incredibly sad, and I really thought he was one of a kind,” the podcast host continued to tell Williams.

The former Dawson’s Creek star spoke with emotion, repeating that the person they were discussing was ‘so special.’ They expressed gratitude for someone named Matilda.

In a 2017 interview with Interview Magazine, Williams discussed what life was like with Ledger after their daughter was born.

‘The first six weeks of our daughter Matilda‘s life was this incredibly insular, protected time.’

The actress explained that it was just the three of them – her, her partner, and their child – living in their new Brooklyn home. They didn’t have any childcare or help from family, and were doing everything themselves.

Williams explained that she, Ledger, and their child shared a strong and special connection, and they all worked to build a close relationship with each other.

That peaceful time ended when work began picking up. With the upcoming release of Brokeback Mountain, the media attention started to increase, but those six weeks beforehand were truly wonderful.

The actress further expressed how ‘everything was possible’ for the late actor.

He had a knack for many things – sports, directing, painting, photography, and building. He was a naturally talented and versatile person.

Williams explained that it might have frustrated some of his friends. He was naturally gifted at almost anything he tried, and didn’t seem to recognize his own limitations.

‘Maybe he had never been told that he couldn’t do something, so everything was possible for him.’

Julia Stiles, who acted alongside Heath Ledger in ’10 Things I Hate About You,’ is one of many celebrities who have shared memories of working with him.

She described him as incredibly charismatic and vibrant, saying he had a remarkable ability to brighten any room he entered, as she shared with E! News last year.

He was incredibly supportive and giving, which was especially important since I was a new lead actress in a major film and needed to feel at ease with my scene partner.
